With her work already featured in Shondaland\u2018s <em>Scandal<\/em> and <em>The<\/em> <em>West Wing<\/em>, the veteran designer knows her way around a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a>\u2019 Oval office. However, Paul William Davies\u2018 <em>The Residence<\/em> proved to present a new, unique challenge for the designer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cAs a costume designer, I will say that it was a really fun jigsaw puzzle, because you have all these elements, all these people, but then you have all the [White House] rooms,\u201d Paolo tells <em>The Hollywood Reporter. <\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn the series, Uzo Aduba\u00a0and\u00a0Randall Park\u00a0are a detective duo enlisted to solve the murder of chief usher A.B. Wynter, who is killed during the most chaotic night for staff: the White House State Dinner. Aduba leads the ensemble cast as Cordelia Cupp, a consulting detective for the Metropolitan Police Department. FBI Special Agent Edwin Park (portrayed by Park) is assigned to work alongside Cupp. Viewers watch the detectives <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> from room to room \u2014 and maybe secret passageways \u2014 all to determine the chain of events that led to Wynter\u2019s demise. Along the way they speak with the varied staff from the chefs to the butlers to the guests, including guest star Kylie Minogue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tA slew of iconic detectives have already graced the screen \u2014 whether it be Agatha Christie staples Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot, to Sherlock Holmes, Matlock and even the recent <em>Knives Out<\/em> sleuth Benoit Blanc. So finding the right look for Aduba\u2019s Cordelia was essential to the show and for the character. But just as vital was a look that not only embodied a 1930s traditional detective look but one that embodied the \u201cquirky\u201d nature of Cordelia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI knew I felt connected to her through the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a> and through her costume when we went through those fittings and finally found that jacket,\u201d Aduba told <em>THR<\/em>. \u201cI understood she was coming into a world where [how] she looked was going to look completely different from everybody else living in it. But I also felt like that was emblematic of who she is. No matter where she is, she\u2019s never fit in. Given that she was already \u201ca huge murder mystery fan,\u201d the costume designer\u2019s research focused on images of the golden age of mystery era that showcased the \u201cclassic looks to detectives\u201d whether it be <em>Midsommar Murder<\/em>s, Miss Marple, Sherlock or the American crime drama television series\u00a0<em>Columbo<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWe did play around with a lot of different looks on Uzo. We did the trench coat because every detective has an iconic piece of costume. And then as we were looking I said to Paul [William Davies], \u201cYou\u2019re gonna think I\u2019ve lost my mind, but I\u2019m kind of obsessed by British field jackets.\u201d Paolo also found the idea for a British field jacket that is normally worn for hunting fitting given Aduba\u2019s Cordelia is a dedicated birder and she too is \u201chunting\u201d but for a killer. It also spoke to the character of Cordelia who has unorthodox methods to solving the mystery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWe went away from the trench coat and just decided this was a way more interesting look,\u201d Paolo says.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn addition to the jacket, Uzo\u2019s Cordelia wears a V-neck sweater and typically wore bird references including shirts that had \u201ctiny little birds on them.\u201d Paolo also found Hepburn pants and Max Mara brogues that had tassels on the front. \u201cPaul loved it and just said, \u201cI feel like this is it. This is Cordelia.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe series takes place on the night of the state dinner at the White House which featured a myriad of guests donning gowns and suits. So making sure that Cordelia could stand out but still blend in enough with her surroundings in some way was also key. \u201cBecause we put her in suiting, and we didn\u2019t have her an outdoor attire, she kind of blends slightly, but then we wanted her to pop,\u201d Paolo explains. \u201cSo when she\u2019s with the bros, they\u2019re either in tuxedos or suiting. Paolo had to assess which colors would work for Cordelia\u2019s attire that wouldn\u2019t have her fade into the background.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cAs a costume designer, I will say that it was a really fun jigsaw puzzle, because you have all these elements, all these people, but then you have all the rooms. And that\u2019s how we ended up with sort of that sort of burnt orange tweed,\u201d she says of Cordelia\u2019s outfit colors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tComfort was also important especially given Cordelia wastes no time in trying to solve the mystery with a bulk of the events taking place in the span of one night. \u201cWherever you end up, you also have to be mindful that your actors need to be able to move. Cordelia moves a lot. She\u2019s down on her knees. I\u2019ve never seen anything like this.\u201d However, the shoes were unavailable. But Paolo praised Max Mara for making up to five more pairs of the shoes for the series.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cIt was a process,\u201d she says. \u201cWe went around and around and around, trying to come up with something that we felt might be iconic as a look for a detective and different because she\u2019s a gal, she\u2019s quirky, and she\u2019s not <em>Matlock<\/em>, she\u2019s just the new version.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWe gave her that sort of, \u2018I\u2019m ready to be a super detective\u2019 [look] but also look sharp in her quirky way. I do love where we ended up. Uzo loved it. Paul loved it. It all came together for me in that moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cJust thinking about iconic detectives, there\u2019s always something you just im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely identify them with, whether it\u2019s a hat or a suit or whatever. I really wanted that for Cordelia, but I wanted it to come out of who I thought she was,\u201d Davies told <em>THR<\/em>. \u201cWe went through a lot of different options. I\u2019ll never forget the day that we ended up where we ended up, and we made some slight adjustments later, but [then it was] \u2018Oh, that\u2019s it. That\u2019s Cordelia. That feels like her.\u2019 I think it really worked. He had to be in a color that was slightly different,\u201d says Paolo. \u201cIn our heads, we sort of thought, \u2018Well, maybe he wasn\u2019t on assignment and he came to work in a suit that he wouldn\u2019t normally wear to work.\u2019 It\u2019s sort of a really strong teal blue. Dressing an ensemble was no easy feat but Paolo explains that finding the unique factor that could help differentiate the characters and give them \u201ctheir own unique costume silhouette or detail\u201d that helped them \u201cstand out from everyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tShe explains, \u201cThere were so many variables. Because first you have a state dinner and you have this element where so many people are in black. I really wanted all the women to be in gold and bronzes, like metallics, just to differentiate and then keep other people in sort of earth tones. That change also marked another challenge for Paolo, who described changing course as \u201ca really great exercise.\u201d She explains, \u201cHalfway through the story, Molly Griggs\u2019 character, Lily, decides that they\u2019re going to completely redo the whole residence. And when you come back, all the uniforms have changed. So that was a double whammy. We\u2019ve gone from the Australians and the Americans [and] this giant state dinner, then all of a sudden, a complete reinvention of the residence itself. You\u2019re not there as an artist. You\u2019re just there as yourself. But then how can we give you something that when you get on the stage would be visually interesting, and more like a performer?\u201d The solution? Fringe. Paolo explains that to give her look something that would quickly make her stage ready was adding fringe to the dress, so \u201cyou get the best of both worlds.\u201d \u201cWhen she\u2019s standing still, talking to people, she\u2019s just in a gown. But when she\u2019s on stage, it has a movement and sort of energy.
