Photo by Shuhei Kojima.<br \/>\n    <\/span><\/p>\n<p>  <span class=\"credit\"><br \/>\n      \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-269308\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            \u201cAshes fall in August \/ In October, the blood shines,\u201d Eiko Ishibashi sings in Japanese near the end of \u201cOctober,\u201d the opening track from <i>Antigone<\/i>. \u201cCovered with ashes, long winter \/ Spring is yet to come,\u201d she begins on the following track, \u201cComa.\u201d Her new album is named for the tragic Sophocles heroine, sentenced to be buried alive after attempting to give her brother a proper burial against the orders of the king; across its songs, one can find grim observations like these, sung serenely over layers of lush instrumentation.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            <i>Antigone<\/i> is Ishibashi\u2019s first songs-based record since 2018\u2019s <i>The Dream My Bones Dream<\/i>, an astounding sound world inspired by her father\u2019s death. Like that project, <i>Antigone<\/i> is a fully immersive experience, pulling the listener down complex emotional currents so gently one hardly notices they\u2019re being taken. In the interim, the Japanese composer, keyboardist, and singer-songwriter has released several instrumental albums, including two scores for the films of Ry\u016bsuke Hamaguchi. In both <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a>, <i>Drive My Car<\/i> and <i>Evil Does Not Exist<\/i>, her music runs on separate, parallel tracks to stories drenched in sadness. The music can feel inscrutable at times, but it\u2019s never neutral. In the latter score, for instance, she subtly pushes back against the Japanese concept of \u201cshiawaze,\u201d the banal h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>iness that is ostensibly achieved by surrendering one\u2019s individuality for a perceived greater good.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-269314\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left video\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Eiko Ishibashi &quot;Coma&quot; (Official Music Video)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ujIO95oOPPA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n \/\/trackYouTubeVideo('269314');\n<\/script><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-269310\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            \u201cOctober\u201d begins and ends with snatches of prerecorded sound \u2014 live symphony strings littered with crowd sound, snatches of two-way radio chatter. Breaking through the noise, its interior is fleshy and airy at once, full of steady instrumental phrases that leave few gaps but seem to ask more questions than they answer. Her accomp<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/anime-manga\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"6\" title=\"Anime || Manga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anime<\/a>nt on \u201cComa\u201d is more self-assured, pointed at a uniform end point. Whereas \u201cOctober\u201d presents us with a scene of devastation watched helplessly from a \u201ccontrol tower,\u201d \u201cComa\u201d ends with a revelation: \u201cS<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> off time that doesn\u2019t stop \/ Searching for impenetrable love \/ A rainbow of tears that never appear,\u201d she sings. \u201cYour never-ending rage runs through the tiresome night \/ Your intolerable worries break your closed heart and flow out to the furthest ocean.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            These sounds that undergird these lyrics are provided by Ishibashi herself (piano, Rhodes, synths), her partner Jim O\u2019Rourke (synths, Bass VI, drum machine), and Tatsuhisa Yamamoto (drums), with bassist Marty Holoubek joining on most tracks and several other players appearing throughout the album. Kalle Moberg\u2019s pedal steel-inspired accordion, for instance, lends a lonesome country-western feel to \u201cComa.\u201d And Kei Matsumaru\u2019s alto and tenor sax help \u201cTrial\u201d achieve its Pat Metheny groove, which persists until a thundercloud bass line from Holoubek shatters the sunny illusion. \u201cThe fragment of words becomes rain, bombarding the roof \/ Sound of violence, death is any time now,\u201d Ishibashi sings.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-269313\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left video\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Eiko Ishibashi &quot;Mona Lisa&quot; (Official Music Video)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sMneuTsSzJQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n \/\/trackYouTubeVideo('269313');\n<\/script><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-269311\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Ishibashi\u2019s metaphors are funny at times \u2014 a Mona Lisa emoji at a charity gala here, a San Francisco sportswear princess there. They\u2019re rarely escapist, though: The former setting is marked by \u201ccaviar, champagne, cocaine\u201d (in English), and \u201cthong\u201d (in Japanese), underscored by a gooey, grandiose waltz. Meanwhile genocide is \u201cglimpsing through each day.\u201d On the LP\u2019s closing, title track, she literalizes her gallows humor: \u201cOn a summer day, gathered in the graveyard, we laugh,\u201d she sings, later adding, \u201cSpectre of death envelops the table, big laughs.\u201d Time and again on <i>Antigone<\/i>, our nonchalance toward the horrors of the world magnifies them tenfold. Just as the Greek Antigone\u2019s unjust demise destroys its perpetrator\u2019s life \u2014 King Creon\u2019s son and wife commit suicide in short succession after Antigone\u2019s death \u2014 perversions of the natural order are met with great suffering.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            The most earnest song on <i>Antigone<\/i> is also the album\u2019s most im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely touching. \u201cNothing As,\u201d the only track sung solely in English, is stripped back both lyrically and instrumentally, leaving the doomsaying ennui of the rest of the record behind. \u201cNothing as a place to be \/ A place where you\u2019re not there,\u201d she begins over warped Rhodes keys, with minimal drums and bass following close behind. \u201cAny time I start to think about how slow it goes, it passes time,\u201d she sings later. \u201cI take a drink and let it slow me down.\u201d It\u2019s a heartbreaking message, but one we\u2019re ready to receive without padded packaging. We\u2019re used to hearing intense, emotional songs about personal grief; reflecting on our complicity in genocide and climate collapse is a far more bitter pill to swallow.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Amid its plush trappings, <i>Antigone<\/i> is an unflinching look at the end of the world. Still, it\u2019s not a hopeless album.
