It identifies 65 startups in this space, 54 of which are European, with a combined value of over $900mn. Over half of these companies were founded within the past five years, with 12 emerging in just the last 12 months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_greener_vision_of_AI\"><\/span>A greener vision of AI<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report highlights three key technologies that hold the most potential to decarbonise AI.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first is advanced semiconductor materials such as Gallium Nitride (GaN), Silicon Carbide (SiC), and graphene. These could significantly reduce AI\u2019s energy consumption by improving efficiency and thermal performance in computing hardware.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the leading innovators in this space is Welsh startup <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Space Forge<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The company is leveraging the microgravity, vacuum, and extreme temperatures of space to produce semiconductors that it claims are three to five times purer than those made on Earth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve pushed the efficiency of silicon chips to their limit,\u201d said Joshua Western, CEO and cofounder at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Space Forge<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another promising avenue lies in new computing paradigms, such as quantum, neuromorphic, and optical computing. Quantum computers, for instance, promise to solve complex calculations much faster than classical machines, potentially reducing computational time and overall energy consumption.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cClassical computers are getting too big, too expensive, and use too much energy and water,\u201d said <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In\u00e9s De Vega<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> VP of innovation at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IQM<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Europe\u2019s best-funded quantum computing startup.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cQuantum computing can both find new solutions to climate change but also drastically reduce the overall energy consumption of computing itself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another type of computing gaining traction is optical computing, which leverages photons \u2014 particles of light \u2014 instead of electrons. It could dramatically increase processing speed, as demonstrated by Germany\u2019s Black Semiconductor. The company\u2019s photonics processors could transmit signals 100 to 1,000 times faster than traditional electronic chips.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anastasiia Nosova, a former chip engineer at German semiconductor giant <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infineon<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and host of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anastasi In Tech podcast, argued that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">photonic chips could be 100 times more energy efficient than regular silicon semiconductors. \u201cThey are one of the most important developments in computing right now,\u201d she said at the Munich event..\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While hardware fixes will be critical, there\u2019s also work to be done in advanced software that makes AI\u2019s energy use more efficient. One of the startups working on this is London-based Deep Render. The company uses <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deep learning<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to compress files while retaining quality beyond what was previously possible. This reduces the volume of data that needs to be transmitted or stored, and thus the amount of computing power required.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While these technologies hold potential, they\u2019re still in the nascent stages of development. Meanwhile, the energy needed to train AI models is doubling every three to four months, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/ai-and-compute\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to OpenAI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor these computing solutions to scale in Europe, we need a lot of venture capital but also government backing,\u201d said Saharova.
