“#Trump advisers defend COVID-19 response in fiery CNN debate<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n White House Trade Adviser Peter Navarro and CNN\u2019s Jake Tapp<\/a>er clashed repeatedly over President Trump\u2019s response to the coronavirus pandemic during a combative interview on Sunday that the CNN host abruptly ended, leaving Navarro in mid-sentence.<\/p>\n

Navarro argued on \u201cState of the Union\u201d that the president took the coronavirus seriously in January, February and March after the outbreak was first reported in China despite comments Trump made in an interview with Bob Woodward that he intentionally downplayed the virus.<\/p>\n

The Trump ally pointed out that the president acted early to ban travel<\/a> from China and ramped up production of medical equipment for hospital workers while not trying to panic Americans and cause chaos.<\/p>\n

Tapper pressed Navarro why the president wasn\u2019t being \u201cstraightforward with the American people?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was straightforward,\u201d Navarro responded.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, he wasn\u2019t,\u201d the CNN host countered.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was \u2014 look, look, Jake, Jake, I\u2019m telling you what our strategy is,\u201d Navarro said.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust answer the \u2014 it\u2019s a very basic question,\u201d Tapper said. \u201cYou want to talk about what you want to talk about, OK?\u201d<\/p>\n

Navarro accused Tapper of \u201ccherry-picking.\u201d<\/p>\n

After several more minutes of back and forth, Navarro said Trump had prepared the administration for the steps it needed to take.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe answer is, in February all the way through the middle of March, when the World Health Organization finally said there was a pandemic and China was hiding the information, finally, that\u2019s when we knew that there was a pandemic,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd you know what, Jake? We were at that point prepared for the worst.\u201d<\/p>\n

Navarro noted that by then, the White House had personal protection equipment ready, as well as testing and vaccine development.<\/p>\n

He later added that Tapper and CNN were \u201cnot honest with the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moments later Tapper thanked Navarro for the interview and abruptly cut away even as the White House adviser repeating, \u201cI answered the question.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI would just like to remind the American people watching that the United States has less than 5 percent of the world\u2019s population, and the United States has more than 20 percent of the world\u2019s coronavirus deaths. That is a fact.<\/p>\n

It does not matter how many times he insults CNN,\u201d Tapper said at the end of the segment.<\/p>\n

Critics pounced on a series<\/a> of recorded interviews Trump gave Woodward for his book \u201cRage,\u201d out Tuesday, to attack the president\u2019s handling of the pandemic.<\/p>\n

In the interviews, Trump acknowledged he was aware of how \u201cdeadly\u201d the coronavirus was in February and said he \u201cwanted to always play it down.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI still like playing it down, because I don\u2019t want to create a panic,\u201d the president said.<\/p>\n

He also told Woodward that he was aware it was more serious than the flu.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Republican National Committee Ronna McDaniel argued on NBC News<\/a>\u2019 \u201cMeet the Press\u201d that: \u201cThe president was calm and steady and methodical.\u201d<\/p>\n

She emphasized that the president canceled travel from China on Jan. 31, created the White House coronavirus task force on Feb. 9, mobilized American companies to ramp up production of protective equipment and ventilators while increasing testing for the virus.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are things you want from a president. Think of what would have happened if he\u2019d have gone out and said, \u2018This is awful. We should all be afraid. We don\u2019t have a plan,’\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would have been a run on the banks. It would have been a run on the hospitals. It would have been a run on the grocery stores.\u201d<\/p>\n

She compared Trump\u2019s response to COVID-19 with former President George W. Bush\u2019s actions during the terror attacks on Sept. 11 after he was informed the second tower had been struck by an airplane.<\/p>\n

\u201cGeorge Bush didn\u2019t stand up and say, \u2018America\u2019s been attacked by terrorists. Everyone panic.\u2019 They created a plan and they presented calm and certainty in a difficult time,\u201d McDaniel said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s different this time is Democrats are politicizing it because we have an election, instead of saying, \u2018Let\u2019s work with you, Mr. President, and make sure we\u2019re all fighting a virus like we\u2019ve never seen together.’\u201d<\/p>\n

McDaniel predicted, \u201chistory will look back on him well as how he handled this pandemic.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
