He was 65.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKilmer, who came to fame for playing the competitive naval aviator Tom \u201cIceman\u201d Kazansky alongside Tom Cruise in Tony Scott\u2019s 1986 mega box-office hit <em>Top Gun<\/em>, died of pneumonia in Los Angeles, his daughter, actress Mercedes Kilmer, told <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/01\/movies\/val-kilmer-dead.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&amp;referringSource=articleShare\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/01\/movies\/val-kilmer-dead.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&amp;referringSource=articleShare\" target=\"_blank\">The New York Times<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHe was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2015, and <em>Val<\/em>, a stirring documentary about his life that premiered at Cannes in July 2021, showed him needing a breathing tube.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tRaised in the San Fernando Valley in the shadow of Hollywood, Kilmer also was known for his meaty performances as Robert De Niro\u2019s nasty henchman in Michael Mann\u2019s <em>Heat<\/em> (1995); as Marlon Brando\u2019s insane assistant in John Frankenheimer\u2019s <em>The Island of Dr. Moreau<\/em> (1996); as the suave crook Simon Templar in Phillip Noyce\u2019s <em>The Saint<\/em> (1997); and as the homosexual detective Gay Perry in Shane Black\u2019s tribute to film noir, <em>Kiss Kiss Bang Bang<\/em> (2005).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKilmer also impressively channeled Elvis Presley in Scott\u2019s <em>True Romance<\/em> (1993), written by Quentin Tarantino, and porn star\/cocaine addict John Holmes in <em>Wonderland<\/em> (2003).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHe was married to British actress Joanne Whalley from 1988 until their divorce in 1996. They met while working together on <em>Willow<\/em> and wed months later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn Oliver Stone\u2018s <em>The Doors<\/em> (1991), Kilmer, with long brown hair and skintight black leathers, was eerily realistic as Morrison, the L.A. band\u2019s iconic frontman who succumbed to drugs in 1971 at age 27. The actor took months to prepare for the role, and he recorded his baritone voice against the backing of original Doors master tapes for the film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe soundtrack \u201ccombines Morrison\u2019s original vocals and new vocals by Val Kilmer so seamlessly that there is never, not even for a moment, the sensation that Kilmer is not singing everything we hear,\u201d Roger Ebert wrote in his review.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThat illusion is strengthened by Kilmer\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earance. He looks so uncannily like Jim Morrison that we feel this is not a case of casting, but of possession. The performance is the best thing in the movie \u2014 and since nearly every scene centers on Morrison, that is not small praise. Val Kilmer has always had a remarkable talent, which until now has been largely overlooked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKilmer also was quite compelling with his scene-stealing turn as the doomed Holliday, a sickly alcoholic who\u2019s quick on the draw, in the modern Western classic <em>Tombstone<\/em> (1993).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cHe works harder than most actors to make it look believable,\u201d <em>Tombstone<\/em> director George Cosmatos told the <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em> in 1993. \u201cHe\u2019s in the ranks of the great actors in America like [Al] Pacino or De Niro.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKilmer then took the cowl vacated by Michael Keaton to star as the moody Caped Crusader in Joel Schumacher\u2019s <em>Batman Forever<\/em> (1995). The film raked in $336 million at the global box office, and only <em>Toy Story<\/em> grossed more that year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cFor me, Val Kilmer was the best Batman,\u201d Schumacher once said, even though they reportedly clashed on the set. (Frankenheimer also didn\u2019t get along with Kilmer; after <em>Dr.<\/em> <em>Moreau<\/em>, he said that the two things he would never do again were \u201cclimb Mount Everest and work with Val Kilmer again.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOn <em>Batman Forever<\/em>, \u201cEverything was different about this job than I\u2019d experienced before,\u201d the actor <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/movies\/165977_flashback_batman_forever_turns_20_the_cast_gushes_over_franchise\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> <em>Entertainment Tonight<\/em> in 1995. \u201cThe size of the character and how strange it was that Michael Keaton had decided not to do it \u2014 I just said yes, without reading the script.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWhen he and Warner Bros. couldn\u2019t agree to terms, Kilmer was one and done as Batman, opting not to return for Frankenheimer\u2019s <em>Batman &amp; Robin<\/em> (1997) as George Clooney stepped in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tVal Edward Kilmer, part Cherokee, Irish, German and Swedish, was born on New Year\u2019s Eve 1959 in the L.A. suburb of Chatsworth. His father was an aerospace engineer and real estate developer and his mother a housewife \u2014 they would end up divorcing when he was 9 \u2014 and he had one older brother, one younger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWesley, his younger sibling, suffered an epileptic seizure and drowned in a swimming pool at the family home that his father had bought from Western movie legends Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. At the time, Kilmer was about to leave to study acting at Juilliard in New York; he was 17 and the youngest person to be admitted to the school\u2019s drama division.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cIt was quite an emotional time for me, and in a way, the extremely high standards and the activity of the school I\u2019m sure were good for me, because I was forced to really challenge myself about my very life, you know \u2014 what I believe about life and death,\u201d he <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20060902185358\/http:\/\/www.juilliard.edu\/update\/journal\/j_articles733.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">said<\/a> in a 2005 interview.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAt Juilliard, he co-wrote <em>How It All Began<\/em>, a play based on the true story of a West German radical, and it wound up being directed by Des McAnuff and produced by Joseph Papp for The Public Theater. He made his Broadway debut in 1983\u2019s <em>Slab Boys<\/em>, also featuring Sean Penn and Kevin Bacon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn his first film, Kilmer starred as rockabilly teen idol Nick Rivers in the daffy spy spoof <em>Top Secret!<\/em> (1984) from Jim Abrahams and the Zucker brothers. (He also was dating Cher around this time.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHe made an ABC Afterschool Special called <em>One Too Many<\/em>, in which he played a teenage alcoholic alongside Mare Winningham, then portrayed a lazy laser-<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> whiz kid in <em>Real Genius<\/em> (1985), from director Martha Coolidge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWhen Scott approached him for <em>Top Gun<\/em>, Kilmer said he wasn\u2019t interested. \u201cI told Tony at the meeting, \u2018Frankly, I don\u2019t like this.\u2019 I loved what I\u2019d seen of his work, but I just didn\u2019t want to do that movie,\u201d he recalled in the <em>Times<\/em> interview. \u201cHe said, \u2018Don\u2019t worry, your hair will look great.\u2019 He thought that would make a difference. He was infectious that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFor many fans, Iceman was his signature role: \u201cPeople talk about it pretty much every time I go to an airport,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKilmer returned for the 2022 sequel, and his health issues\u00a0were evident. His brief scenes in the movie, David Rooney wrote in <em>THR<\/em>\u2018s review, generated \u201cresonant pathos. There\u2019s reciprocal warmth, even love, in a scene between Iceman and [Cruise\u2019s] Maverick that acknowledges the characters\u2019 hard-won bond as well as the rivalry that preceded it, with gentle humor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKilmer also provided the voice of K.I.T.T. in a new version of TV\u2019s <em>Knight Rider<\/em> in 2008-09; played opposite Nicolas Cage in Werner Herzog\u2019s <em>Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans<\/em> (2009); portrayed the bad guy Cunth for laughs in <em>MacGruber<\/em> (2010); starred for Francis Ford Coppola in <em>Twixt<\/em> (2011); was a creepy building superintendent in <em>The Super<\/em> (2018); and directed, wrote and starred as Mark Twain in <em>Citizen Twain<\/em>, a one-man show that he brought to stages around the country and then to the big screen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn 2011, Kilmer sold off most of his 6,000-acre ranch outside Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he had lived for decades.
