{"id":661007,"date":"2025-04-06T02:45:23","date_gmt":"2025-04-05T23:45:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/why-monkeys-are-better-at-yodeling-than-humans\/"},"modified":"2025-04-06T02:45:23","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T23:45:23","slug":"why-monkeys-are-better-at-yodeling-than-humans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/why-monkeys-are-better-at-yodeling-than-humans\/","title":{"rendered":"Why monkeys are better at yodeling than humans"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div class=\"article-gallery lightGallery\">\n<div data-thumb=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/tmb\/2025\/spider-monkeys-can-hit.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/scx2.b-cdn.net\/gfx\/news\/2025\/spider-monkeys-can-hit.jpg\" data-sub-html=\"Spider monkeys can hit the widest range of octaves while 'yodelling', easily beating humans.\">\n<figure class=\"article-img\">\n            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/800a\/2025\/spider-monkeys-can-hit.jpg\" alt=\"Spider monkeys can hit the widest range of octaves while 'yodelling', easily beating humans\" title=\"Spider monkeys can hit the widest range of octaves while 'yodelling', easily beating humans.\" width=\"800\" height=\"530\"\/><figcaption class=\"text-darken text-low-up text-truncate-js text-truncate mt-3\">\n                Spider monkeys can hit the widest range of octaves while &#8216;yodelling&#8217;, easily beating humans.<br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Yodelers of the world, you never stood a chance: Monkeys will always be better at yodeling than humans because they have a &#8220;cheap trick&#8221; hidden in their voice box, scientists revealed Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>When monkeys howl\u2014or yodelers yodel\u2014they rapidly switch back and forth between low and high frequency sounds.<\/p>\n<p>This is in contrast to opera singers, who are trained to precisely control how they gradually move from note to note, in a way that is pleasing to listen to.<\/p>\n<p>Yodelers and monkeys, however, make bigger jumps far more abruptly, creating vocal breaks that sound like Tarzan&#8217;s yell.<\/p>\n<p>When yodeling, a human might be able to jump an octave, which doubles the frequency.<\/p>\n<p>Monkeys can manage three and half octaves, according to a new study.<\/p>\n<p>A &#8220;cheap trick&#8221; in their larynx means these monkeys will always beat humans, senior study author Jacob Dunn of the UK&#8217;s Anglia Ruskin University told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>Both humans and monkeys have a pair of vocal folds in their larynx which vibrate to create sound.<\/p>\n<p>But monkeys have an additional pair of membranes that gives them a far wider pitch range, the international team of researchers discovered.<\/p>\n<p>This is thought to give monkeys, which are <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> creatures, a more complex way of communicating with each other.<\/p>\n<p>All other primates, and even ancient human ancestors, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear to have this special tissue, Dunn said.<\/p>\n<p>At some during our evolution, humans seem to have lost these membranes, he added.<\/p>\n<p>But the shame of being inferior yodelers may have been worth the trade-off.<\/p>\n<p>To be able to speak clearly, humans needed a &#8220;streamlined&#8221; larynx\u2014and these membranes would have gotten in the way, Dunn explained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you put a human brain on the primate larynx&#8221; it would struggle to speak intelligibly because of the membranes and other things like air sacs, he said.<\/p>\n<p>For the study, the researchers put sensors on the necks of some monkeys at Bolivia&#8217;s La Senda Verde Wildlife Sanctuary.<\/p>\n<p>This allowed them to see what was going on in the larynx of black and gold howler monkeys, tufted capuchins, black-capped squirrel monkeys and Peruvian spider monkeys.<\/p>\n<p>The spider monkey was the best yodeler, managing around four octaves, Dunn said.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers also studied the larynges of dead monkeys and used computer modeling to analyze the frequencies.<\/p>\n<p>The study was published in the journal <i>Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B<\/i>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__more p-4\">\n<p><strong>More information:<\/strong><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tChristian T.
