The 26-year-old Vietnamese-American singer (born Kayle Le in Jacksonville) curves her words slightly when she speaks, especially prominent when she peppers in words like \u201chella\u201d and \u201cvibe.\u201d It shapes the way she croons \u201cTo whatever bitch you got in Bushw<i>iii<\/i>ck\u201d on \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dRlWPrmkTq8\">Pookie\u2019s Requiem<\/a>,\u201d the November 2024 song that introduced the world to her lovelorn R&amp;B. The single that followed, \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WQ7jmbj99V4\">Cut Up<\/a>,\u201d takes its title from slang used widely across Florida and the South (to cut up: to start acting up over something). We\u2019re talking over a video call and she\u2019s still in bed, dressed in a slouchy black tee and out of her usual uniform of pink, frills, and bows. \u201cThe South, it\u2019s very traditional and almost conservative there. When you find your little pockets in communities that you do resonate with, it&#8217;s a very beautiful thing.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            She\u2019s speaking to me from her new home in Los Angeles, where she moved in January as her life began to change. In the five months since \u201cPookie\u2019s Requiem\u201d became ubiquitous on TikTok, SAILORR skyrocketed from being a virtual unknown to an artist <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@hallebailey\/video\/7462850035529583915\">covered<\/a> by Halle Bailey, posted by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DH_ralSyBeN\/?hl=en&amp;img_index=1\">Justin Bieber<\/a>, and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cygmozoGLI8\">remixed<\/a> by Summer Walker. In March, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> broke that her label BuVision, run by Akon\u2019s brother Abou Thiam, would be <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/pro\/bu-thiam-atlantic-music-group-buvision-label\/\">merging<\/a> with Atlantic Music Group, sending her further into the big leagues. All the attention has brought countless new eyes, and she\u2019s feeling it.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            &#8220;It&#8217;s very jarring to realize that this many people are watching me,\u201d she says early in our interview, initially reluctant to turn on her camera but concedes when I reassure her the footage won\u2019t be used. \u201cThe only thing that really keeps me grounded is the music. But after realizing she didn\u2019t enjoy \u201ctelling other people&#8217;s narratives,\u201d she pivoted to teaching herself how to make her own beats: first on a SP-404 digital sampler, then D.A.Ws like Fruity Loops and Ableton. From there, she integrated herself in a community of music-making friends.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            Before she was SAILORR, Le released music under the name Sailor Goon, a moniker inspired by the Japanese <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/anime-manga\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"6\" title=\"Anime || Manga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anime<\/a> <i>Sailor Moon<\/i> that nodded to the \u201csoft but also hard\u201d style of her personality. \u201cI have gone through a lot of shit in my life and had to grow up to be a super, hyper-independent person,\u201d she says, declining to go into detail. Her early sample-driven songs showcased her fluid runs and deep, resonant voice (most, if not all, of these songs have since been taken down). Busted 808s ravage the delicate allure of her latest single \u201cDown Bad,\u201d another track about shameless wallowing produced by Zach Essy and Adam Krevlin \u2014 two longtime friends from Jacksonville whom SAILORR describes as the \u201cTimbaland to [my] Missy\u201d \u2014 that pries at complex femininity (\u201cIt&#8217;s bad bitch energy, but also softness\u201d). The song precedes her debut album, expected to drop this spring and further flesh out the SAILORR universe. The vibe is \u201csexy as hell,\u201d she teases, and feels \u201clike a hot ass summer in Florida with your homegirls, smoking cigarettes on the side of the road.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            SAILORR doesn\u2019t want her art to be tied to her ethnicity (\u201cThere&#8217;s a lot more to me than just being Vietnamese,\u201d she says matter-of-factly). Everything she makes, she insists, is to \u201chonor women\u201d \u2014 complicated women, messy women, toxic women, women who double text and spiral.
