After launching in 2018 with Kevin Costner\u2018s central patriarch John Dutton III and his im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te family, co-creator Taylor Sheridan <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>ed back in time to expand the family and introduce elder generations of Duttons, first with the single season of <em>1883<\/em> and then with the series <em>1923<\/em>, which just released its second (and possibly final) season finale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe Dutton family tree has branched out as <em>Yellowstone<\/em> has been airing, with the flagship series having aired what may have been its final episode with the season 5B finale in December 2024. (If you\u2019re sensing a pattern, it\u2019s because Paramount and Sheridan have not confirmed if <em>Yellowstone<\/em> and\/or <em>1923<\/em> have officially ended.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn <em>1883<\/em>, viewers followed James (Tim McGraw) and Margaret Dutton (Faith Hill) on their family\u2019s treacherous journey west through the Great Plains on a trek that would ultimately lead to what becomes the Yellowstone ranch of the flagship series. Decades later, <em>1923<\/em> would then introduce the audience to Jacob (Harrison Ford) and Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren), the Duttons who get the Yellowstone ranch up and running after the untimely deaths of James and Margaret.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWith both of these sequel series taking place decades before <em>Yellowstone<\/em>\u2018s John (Costner) was even born, it\u2019s helpful to understand who\u2019s who in the family saga, especially since revisiting the past helps to reframe the present. After all, it all circled back around in the end with <em>Yellowstone<\/em>\u2019s supersized finale, directed by Sheridan. And now the ending to <em>1923<\/em> has paved a path to the next prequel series that will be coming from Sheridan, <em>1944<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe biggest lingering question in the family tree has been about the identity of Costner\u2019s John\u2019s grandparents. His father, John II (Dabney Coleman) was briefly introduced in <em>Yellowstone<\/em>, but his grandfather has remained a mystery on the board. The ending of <em>1923<\/em> answered that question for some, though others remain unconvinced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<em>Yellowstone<\/em> fan-favorites Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser are steering the <em>Yellowstone<\/em>-verse ship towards a Rip and Beth spinoff series that is actively in development, and Luke Grimes is reportedly in early talks for a Kayce spinoff over at CBS. Other spinoffs are already in the works, including the present day-set series <em>The Madison<\/em>, which is currently in production.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBelow, <em>The Hollywood Reporter <\/em>breaks down each generation of Duttons, including what we\u2019ve learned via interviews with Sheridan and his sprawling cast. The Western limited series, which is set in the year 1883, was narrated by main character Elsa Dutton (Isabel May), the daughter to James (Tim McGraw) and Margaret Dutton (Faith Hill). The prequel series traced the Dutton lineage back to James Dutton and his sister Claire nee Dutton (played by Dawn Olivieri; the actress who would also go on to play fixer Sarah Atwood in later seasons of <em>Yellowstone<\/em>), who died by suicide early on in <em>1883<\/em>. Her daughter Mary Abel (Emma Malouff) also died; viewers never met Claire\u2019s husband, named Henry Dutton. Her spirit, however, would continue on in the franchise, as May narrates <em>1923<\/em> \u2014 and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eared in a surprise voiceover cameo in the <em>Yellowstone<\/em> season 5B finale. Speaking from the grave as Elsa to open <em>1923<\/em>, she informed viewers that her parents, James and Margaret, died after the events of\u00a0<em>1883<\/em>; first James, followed by Margaret. But before her death, Margaret wrote a letter to her husband\u2019s brother, Jacob, who then found and raised Elsa\u2019s surviving brothers, John Sr. and Spencer. <em>1883<\/em> viewers met John Sr. as a young boy, played by Audie Rick. Spencer, however, hadn\u2019t yet been born.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cUpon my father\u2019s death, my mother wrote to his brother, begging that he bring his family to this wild land and save hers,\u201d Elsa explained in voiceover in <em>1923<\/em>. \u201cA year later, he arrived to find my mother frozen in a snow drift, her two boys half-starved and barely able to speak. He raised them as his own and took my father\u2019s dream and made it into an empire. John Sr., who did not have any children with wife Emma (Marley Shelton), suffers an untimely death early on in <em>1923<\/em>, pivoting the series to focus on Spencer and setting him up to be the Dutton to take over the <em>Yellowstone<\/em> ranch from an ailing Jacob. Season one ended with a Spencer-heavy cliffhanger, as he was separated from his new bride Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer), and season two hinged on his Montana return to save both the family and the Yellowstone ranch from external threats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe second season eventually brought Spencer back to Montana to save the ranch and Dutton legacy, but that celebratory moment in the finale was overshadowed by the tragic death of Alexandra who, after a harrowing voyage to get back to Spencer, dies shortly after childbirth. Their premature baby defies the odds and survives, and they name the boy John. Sklenar and Schlaepfer said in post-finale interviews that they believe their baby is the John who carries on the legacy, but Michelle Randolph, whose character Elizabeth married Spencer\u2019s nephew, Jack, isn\u2019t so sure.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-accent-l   \"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Jack_Darren_Mann_and_Elizabeth_Dutton_Michelle_Randolph\"><\/span>\n\t\tJack (Darren Mann) and Elizabeth Dutton (Michelle Randolph)\t<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAfter five seasons of <em>Yellowstone<\/em> and trips back in time to <em>1883<\/em> and <em>1923<\/em>, one over-arching question remained: Who is John Dutton\u2019s grandfather? <em>Yellowstone<\/em> viewers were introduced to John\u2019s elderly father, John (Coleman), in a season two flashback. John\u2019s mother has yet to appear or be named. Others thought John Sr.\u2019s son, Jack (Darren Mann), who is Spencer\u2019s nephew, could serve that role. Later episodes of <em>1923<\/em> revealed that Jack\u2019s pregnant wife, Liz (Michelle Randolph), had a miscarriage, and she and Jack accepted they may not be able to have a child. According to Sklenar, Sheridan hadn\u2019t revealed who\u2019s who, even to the cast, after filming season one. \u201cIt\u2019s something that Taylor is keeping very close to the vest. I have my own theories, but it\u2019s to be told, to be written, to be seen. He\u2019s always moving all that stuff around,\u201d Sklenar told <em>THR<\/em> during the first season (and reiterated after the finale). \u201cWe like to debate what we think,\u201d echoed Randolph.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<em>Yellowstone<\/em> star Wes Bentley said something similar when asked about his onscreen father\u2019s lineage. \u201cI\u2019ve seen the [Dutton family tree] flow charts online. But I\u2019m waiting for Taylor to really reveal things. I know how he writes. So I\u2019m going to wipe those away for now. Good first draft, but let\u2019s see what\u2019s coming down the line,\u201d he told <em>THR<\/em> after the season 5A midseason finale of <em>Yellowstone<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt was even a mystery to the franchise\u2019s all-knowing narrator last year. \u201cYou could spend your time theorizing, all the power to you. I\u2019d rather just be told! Eventually, we all will,\u201d May told <em>THR<\/em> in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMay, when returning for the <em>Yellowstone<\/em> finale\u2019s surprise voiceover, may have pieced this puzzle together. In her monologue (which you can read in full, below), she referred to the current Dutton family tree as having existed for seven generations. That would mean that Jack \u2014 not Spencer \u2014 would earn the title of John\u2019s grandfather, based on the known lineage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBut then <em>1923<\/em>\u2019s season two finale put two Dutton babies on the board. There\u2019s John, son of Spencer and Alex, and then there\u2019s the baby Elizabeth is carrying of Jack\u2019s when she leaves the ranch in the end. Sklenar told <em>THR<\/em> that he got his answer with the \u201cprofoundly beautiful\u201d ending for Spencer and Alex, but Randolph questioned if he\u2019s right and the role Elizabeth could still play in the future, especially with the next prequel series <em>1944<\/em> on the horizon. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cMy interpretation is that we still don\u2019t know [who the grandfather is]. (<em>Laughs<\/em>) It\u2019s not verified,\u201d she said. \u201cI thought by the end of the season we would know, and it\u2019s funny because that\u2019s obviously the question I always get. Following the death of his young wife Evelyn Dutton (Gretchen Mol), the family suffered another untimely death when oldest child, Lee Dutton (Dave Annable), was killed in the series premiere. Jamie Dutton (Bentley), Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) remained alive \u2014 and fiery \u2014 heading into the season 5B finale, as they sought to avenge the death of their father (Costner departed the series between seasons 5A and 5B; John was killed off in the season 5B premiere). With Kayce largely forming his own path with wife Monica Dutton (Kelsey Asbille) and their surviving son Tate (Brecken Merrill), the battle for the legacy of <em>Yellowstone<\/em> largely boiled down to estranged siblings Jamie and Beth, who kicked off season 5B by waging a war against one another. On Beth\u2019s side of the battle was the now-departed John, as well as husband Rip (Cole Hauser), who plays the devoted, Yellowstone head ranch hand. Season 5B, however, elevated Kayce to Beth\u2019s side, as they sought to expose brother Jamie for his involvement in their father\u2019s assassination. They also went into the season finale with a plan as to how to save the ranch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe season 5B finale (<em>spoiler alert!<\/em>) revealed the fate of the ranch, bringing the series back to the beginning with the <em>1883<\/em> series promise made between James Dutton and then-Chief of the Crow Tribe, Spotted Eagle (played by Graham Greene). Elsa Dutton explained in voiceover:<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<em>One-hundred-and-forty years ago, my father was told of this valley and here\u2019s were we stayed, for seven generations. My father was told they would come for this land, and he promised to return it. Nowhere was that promise written. It faded with my father\u2019s death, but somehow lived in the spirit of this place. Men cannot truly own wild land. To own land you must blanket it in concrete, cover it with buildings. Stack it with houses so thick, people can smell each other\u2019s supper. You must rape it to sell it. Raw land, wild land, free land can never be owned. But some men pay dearly for the privilege of stewardship. They will suffer and sacrifice to live off it and live with it, and hopefully teach the next generation to do the same. And if they falter, find another willing to keep the promise.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<em>Yellowstone<\/em> ended with Kayce and Beth selling the ranch back to the reservation and Beth making good on another promise: She kills brother Jamie, setting up a perfect murder that will likely see him going down for the death of their father. The final shots of the season 5B finale captured the cascading Montana land, as both Kayce and Beth are seen settling into their new lives and fresh starts, with Kayce in the former Yellowstone\u2019s East Camp with his family and Beth with Rip in their new ranch 40 miles away from Dillon, Montana. After expressing interest in doing what his father requires of him when it comes to the ranch, <em>Yellowstone<\/em> ended with Kayce wanting to start his own brand after selling Yellowstone, a venture he begins with son Tate as the father-and-son are seen purchasing cattle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe now deceased infant son of Jamie\u2019s with ex Christina (Katherine Cunningham) was finally referenced in the penultimate episode of season 5B after being largely absent from the fifth season; but Jamie\u2019s involvement as a father had remained unclear. (\u201cThis season is not about Jamie as a father; this season is about Jamie as a son,\u201d executive producer Christina Voros explained.) Beth and husband Rip, meanwhile, have all-but adopted teen cowboy Carter (Finn Little), however, he is not in the Dutton bloodline and it\u2019s unclear if he travels with them to their new Montana home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAnd now, new characters will be added to the future timeline with <em>The Madison<\/em>, the sequel series that will take place after the events of <em>Yellowstone<\/em> and will star Michelle Pfeiffer. It remains to be seen what relation, if any, her character has to the Duttons, but the series was initially described as one that would include both new and familiar faces and locations.
