\n\tNow that the dust has settled from HBO\u2019s The White Lotus<\/em> third season finale, creator Mike White is getting candid about the show\u2019s Emmy-winning composer announcing he\u2019s quitting the show. <\/p>\n

\n\tTalking to Howard Stern on Tuesday, White was asked about composer Crist\u00f3bal Tapia de Veer saying he\u2019s not returning for the HBO drama\u2019s fourth season after feuding with White over show\u2019s score. The composer told The New York Times<\/em> last week that he is exiting the show, saying, \u201cWe already had our last fight forever.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI honestly don\u2019t know what happ<\/a>ened, except now I\u2019m reading his interviews because he decides to do some PR campaign about him leaving the show,\u201d White said. \u201cI don\u2019t think he respected me. He wants people to know that he\u2019s edgy and dark and I\u2019m, I don\u2019t know, like I watch reality TV. We never really even fought. He says we feuded. I don\u2019t think I ever had a fight with him \u2014 except for maybe some emails. It was basically me giving him notes. I don\u2019t think he liked to go through the process of getting notes from me, or wanting revisions, because he didn\u2019t respect me. I knew he wasn\u2019t a team player and that wanted to do it his way. I was thrown that he would go to The New York Times<\/em> to shit on me and the show three days before the finale. It was kinda of a bitch move.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhite added that he struggled with de Veer during the first two seasons. \u201cBy the time the third season came around, he\u2019d won Emmys and he had his song go viral, he didn\u2019t want to go through the process with me, he didn\u2019t want to go to sessions. He would always look at me with this contemptuous smirk on his face like he thought I was a chimp or something \u2026 he\u2019s definitely making a big deal out of a creative difference.<\/p>\n

\n\tStern marveled: \u201cYou\u2019re the genius behind this thing. Why quit a hit show because you got some notes and some differences? Just work it out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhite replied, \u201cHe is very talented. [But] I\u2019ve never kissed somebody\u2019s ass so hard to just get him to \u2014 to lead that horse to water. Have fun with whatever you\u2019re doing next.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the Times<\/em> story, de Veer said, \u201cMaybe I was being unprofessional, and, for sure, Mike feels that I was always unprofessional to him because I didn\u2019t give him what he wanted. But what I gave him did\u00a0this<\/em>, you know \u2014 [won] those Emmys, people going crazy [for the show]\u2026 That is the main thing that I\u2019m most happy about \u2014 it was worth all the tension and almost forcing the music into the show, in a way, because I didn\u2019t have that many allies in there \u2026 This was a good struggle.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWith season three having broken ratings records for the series<\/a>, White also revealed he\u2019s currently renegotiating his HBO deal ahead of the show\u2019s fourth season, while Stern pressed him on how much money he\u2019s going to make. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe are renegotiating right now, I\u2019m definitely curious to find out what that [amount] is,\u201d White said. \u201cI feel like I have financial security for sure \u2026 at a certain point with money, [you wonder]: \u2018Is this going to make me worse?\u2019 Is having more money just going to make me more dysfunctional?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tStern, of course, also pressed White on infamous \u201cincest handjob\u201d between Patrick Schwarzenegger and Sam Nivola\u2019s sibling characters and the creator admitted that, to some degree, he was indeed trying to generate some shock and attention for the show.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIn the show, it\u2019s a trope where gay sex is like a jump scare,\u201d he said. \u201cI just felt like we had to build a trope. We had done faux incest [in season two, where two characters turned out not to be related], so maybe we should do real incest. Beyond the shock of it, just to have a character like Patrick[\u2018s Saxon], who\u2019s all about getting off and just thinks of sex in base terms, what would need to happen to him to where he\u2019d suddenly have to pull the brakes on the way he\u2019s thinking? I was trying to think of a way that would be integral to his character. But it would be a talking point for sure. Once we cast Patrick and Sam [and they saw the script], I told them, \u2018You guys can still get out of this, you\u2019re going to be the face of gay incest.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhite also said he\u2019s been reading all the finale coverage and has been angsting a bit over the (relatively modest) criticisms out there. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThey\u2019re criticizing the show in certain ways and they\u2019re meaner in certain ways [now that the show is popular],\u201d White said. \u201cI\u2019m used to being this underdog indie writer that people are championing. Certain things will hurt my feelings or I\u2019ll feel misunderstood. The mean ones have gotten meaner. It\u2019s like they don\u2019t like me<\/em>. I guess I need to either avoid that stuff or get tougher, because it does bum me out.\u201d<\/p>\n
