\n\tThe Cannes Film Festival is unveiling the films that will compete in its 78th edition, which will run May 13-24, on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\n\tCannes delegate general<\/a> Thierry Fr\u00e9maux and president Iris Knobloch, are presiding over the festival\u2019s official press conference, kicking off in Paris at 11 a.m. local time (2 a.m. PT).<\/p>\n

\n\tKnobloch opened the press conference with a plea for tolerance and diversity, saying that for almost 80 years, the Cannes film festival has been in \u201cdialog with the world, embodying a France that is brave, curious and open.\u201d She also paid tribute to the victims of the L.A. fires, praising the resilience of the U.S. industry in the wake of the devastation. <\/p>\n

\n\tFr\u00e9maux said the festival screened 2,909 features in its selection process, an all-time record.<\/p>\n

\n\tCannes reaffirmed its position as the world\u2019s number one film festival last year, with Cannes 2024 selections racking up a total of 31 Oscar nominations, and nine wins, led by Sean Baker\u2019s 2024 Palme d\u2019Or winner Anora<\/em><\/a> which rode its success on the Croisette all the way to 5 Academy Awards, including best picture. Last year\u2019s festival also produced the break-out successes of Emilia P\u00e9rez, The Substance<\/em> and animated winner Flow<\/em>, further stoking interest in this year\u2019s selection.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe 2025 competition line-up is packed with auteur heavyweights, including Kelly Reichardt, who returns to Cannes competition with The Mastermind<\/em>, an art-heist drama starring Josh O\u2019Connor and John Magaro, set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War; Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Trier, who returns to the Croisette after his 2021 triumph (with\u00a0The Worst Person of the World<\/em>) with Sentimental Value<\/em>, also featuring Renate Reinsve; and Richard Linklater\u2019s\u00a0Nouvelle Vague<\/em>, a French-language feature that tells the story of Jean-Luc Godard making his classic Breathless<\/em>. <\/p>\n

\n\tCannes on Tuesday confirmed this year\u2019s worst-kept festival secret: Tom Cruise will return to the Croisette for the world premiere of\u00a0Mission: Impossible \u2013 The Final Reckoning<\/em>, which will have an out-of-competition bow in Cannes ahead of its May 23 global release by\u00a0Paramount.<\/p>\n

\n\tAmong the out of competition highlights this year are Jodie Foster-starrer Vie Priv\u00e9e<\/em>, directed by Rebecca Zlotowski, the music documentary Bono: Stories of Surrender <\/em>from Blonde<\/em> and Killing Them Softly <\/em>director Andrew Dominik, about the U2 frontman; Amrum<\/em>, the latest feature from German director Fatih Akin, starring his In the Fade <\/em>collaborator Diane Kruger; Sebasti\u00e1n Lelio\u2018s Spanish-language feminist musical The Wave<\/em>; and The Disapp<\/a>earance of Joseph Mengele <\/em>from Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov. <\/p>\n

\n\tCannes\u2019 Un Certain Regard sidebar will be packed with directorial debuts, including Eleanor the Great<\/em>, Scarlett Johansson\u2019s first turn behind the camera, which stars June Squibb; Harrison Dickinson\u2019s Urchin, a British drama about a homeless man in London; and My Father\u2019s Shadow,<\/em> a hotly-anticipated debut from British-Nigerian filmmaker Akinola Davies starring Gangs of London<\/em> and Slow Horses<\/em> actor Sope D\u00ecr\u00eds\u00f9.<\/p>\n

\n\tFrench star and Oscar winner Juliette Binoche\u00a0will head up the 2025 Cannes jury, which is picking the Palme winners, as president. Robert De Niro\u00a0will be honored with an honorary Palme d\u2019Or for lifetime achievement at the Cannes opening ceremony this year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
