Discovery<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-2'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-4\" href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/streaming-profit-report-netflix-leads-disney-rises-warner-grows-is-consolidation-next\/#Paramount_Global\" >Paramount Global<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-2'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-5\" href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/streaming-profit-report-netflix-leads-disney-rises-warner-grows-is-consolidation-next\/#NBCUniversal\" >NBCUniversal<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt has taken a few years, but more legacy Hollywood studios\u2019 streaming\u00a0businesses have started turning annual profits, with the rest touting progress toward that goal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tNetflix, crowned on Wall Street as the undisputed king of\u00a0streaming, grew its subscribers, revenue and profit in 2024. Meanwhile, among studios \u2014 which have been refocused on streaming\u00a0profits\u00a0after their initial bullseye on subscriber gains \u2014 Warner Bros. Discovery last year managed to multiply a small 2023 profit for the business that includes, among others, its streaming operations, while Disney swung to its first-ever full calendar-year streaming profit.\u00a0And Comcast\u2019s NBCUniversal and Paramount Global narrowed the losses in the divisions with their core\u00a0streaming\u00a0businesses with an eye on profitability ahead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBoosting the bottom lines were such factors as more selective spending on original programming, price increases and a push of cheaper sub<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>ion tiers that include advertising. \u201cNetflix spends more on direct-to-consumer (DTC) content than any other company, yet because of its size, its spend per subscriber is in line with peers,\u201d MoffettNathanson analysts Robert Fishman and Michael Nathanson highlighted in a Feb. 11 report. \u201cIt also generates less revenue per hour of engagement than any other SVOD platform, yet the magnitude of its engagement means its aggregate revenues are second to none.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe question now is how sustainable and scaleable streaming profits can be for anyone not called Netflix. And Wall Street observers <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly don\u2019t expect them to ever rival the profitability of cable networks divisions at the height of their financial power before the rise of cord-cutting. But many expect this streaming environment to just be waiting for a shake-up, including with consolidation, partnerships and more bundling among major streaming platforms. So where did Netflix and the streaming arms of Hollywood giants stand as of the end of the calendar year 2024?<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-datawrapper wp-block-embed-datawrapper\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Streaming Subscribers\" aria-label=\"Stacked Columns\" id=\"datawrapper-chart-nawZc\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/nawZc\/2\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"width: 0; min-width: 100% !important; border: none;\" height=\"424\" data-external=\"1\"><\/iframe>\n<\/p><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Netflix, the global leader in streaming subscriptions, far outpaces all of its rivals. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFor an analysis, keep in mind that the divisions that contain Hollywood companies\u2019\u00a0streaming\u00a0businesses are not directly comparable. For example, Warner Bros. Discovery\u2019s \u201cDirect-to-Consumer,\u201d or DTC, unit consists of its\u00a0streaming\u00a0<em>and<\/em> premium pay-TV services, meaning HBO is part of it. Meanwhile, the Disney\u2019s \u201cDirect-to-Consumer\u201d division does not include ESPN+. And Comcast\u2019s NBUniversal breaks out revenue and\u00a0profit\u00a0for its streamer Peacock, which is part of its broader <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a> unit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMeanwhile, Netflix has traditionally focused on the\u00a0streaming video business but has also started pushing into other areas, such as gaming and merchandise.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWhile apples-to-apples comparisons aren\u2019t possible, a look at the streaming businesses is educative for identifying longer-term trends. Also, keep in mind that Disney\u2019s fiscal year runs through the fall, while <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> calculated DTC results for the calendar years 2024 and 2023 to focus on a comparable period.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWith all that said, here is a closer look at Netflix and Hollywood giants\u2019\u00a0streaming\u00a0businesses in 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-accent-l   \"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Netflix\"><\/span>\n\t\tNetflix\t<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:1296px\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  \">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((730\/1296)*100%);\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-hollywoodreporter-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Squid-Game-Season-2_2024-Slate-Announcement_01-1.jpg?w=1296\" alt=\"\" data-lazy-srcset=\"\" data-lazy-sizes=\"\" height=\"730\" width=\"1296\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-padding-tb-025\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"a-font-secondary-s lrv-u-margin-r-025\">\u2018Squid <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Game<\/a>\u2019 season two. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"a-font-accent-uppercase-xs lrv-u-color-grey-dark\">Netflix<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tProfit:\u00a0<strong>$10.4B<\/strong>\u00a0<em>+49%<\/em>\u00a0<em>year-over-year<\/em><br \/>Revenue:\u00a0<strong>$33.7B<\/strong>\u00a0<em>+16%\u00a0year-over-year<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tNetflix\u2019s 2024 revenue and operating income jumped, with the latter exceeding $10 billion for the first time in the company\u2019s history. (ESPN+ is part of the company\u2019s sports segment, which<em> THR<\/em> isn\u2019t including in its analysis here.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAmong the original series drawing audiences and buzz were the likes of <em>Sh\u014dgun<\/em>, <em>Agatha All Along<\/em> and <em>Only Murders in the Building<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThe only way you succeed in global streaming, both from a subscription perspective and a profitability perspective, is with a great combination of high-quality product with volume and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>,\u201d Disney CEO Bob Iger said during a February earnings conference call. \u201cAnd we feel if you look at all the competitors that are in that space, we\u2019re very well positioned to both grow subs and grow profits over the long run.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-accent-l   \"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Warner_Bros_Discovery\"><\/span>\n\t\tWarner Bros. Discovery ended 2024 with a healthy gain in global streaming subscribers, including both Max\u00a0and Discovery+, to nearly 117 million. And in a shareholder <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>letter, WBD outlined a path to at least 150 million subscribers by the end of 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Helping the gains were not only such originals as <em>The Penguin<\/em>, <em>House of the Dragon<\/em>, <em>Industry<\/em>, and <em>True Detective: Night Country<\/em> but also launches in new international markets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cMax continues to grow at a powerful pace, and we expect it to continue throughout 2025 and beyond,\u201d WBD CEO David Zaslav told Wall Street. \u201cIn this generational media disruption, only the global streamers will survive and prosper, and Max is just that.\u201d The conglomerate has also said it will always be striving for Max to be a top 3 streamer in all the markets where it is available.<\/p>\n<h2 2024 in the run-up to Paramount Global\u2019s planned sale to Skydance Media this year, while its ad tiers and Pluto TV brought in advertising revenue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCo-CEOs George Cheeks, Chris McCarthy and Brian Robbins recently touted a \u201ctransformative year,\u201d including what they have called a shift to becoming a streaming-first company. \u201cDirect-to-consumer (DTC) profitability improved $1.2 billion in 2024, driven by an impressive year at Paramount+,\u201d they said, expressing \u201cgreat confidence Paramount+ will achieve full-year domestic profitability for 2025.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The co-CEOs also lauded Paramount+ for hitting its \u201chighest level of engagement yet\u201d in the fourth quarter of 2024 and \u201cranking as the number 2 domestic SVOD service for hours watched across all original series.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-accent-l   \"><span
