This change was observed following Google\u2019s March 2025 core update.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By the numbers.<\/strong> The overlap between AI Overview citations and Google\u2019s top 10 organic positions dropped from 16% to 15% following the March 2025 core update. Shift by industry:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Travel<\/a> industry:<\/strong> 6.6 percentage point increase in regular result citations (from 12.9% to 19.5%).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Entertainment:<\/strong> 4.9 percentage point increase (from 8.8% to 13.7%) for movie queries.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Restaurants: <\/strong>4.6 percentage point increase (from 9.5% to 14.1%) for dining content.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why we care.<\/strong> Tens of millions of searches per day now feature AI-generated summaries that don\u2019t cite the highest-ranked results from organic search. The good <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>? Pages ranking outside Google\u2019s top 10 positions now have a better shot at being cited in AI Overviews.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But.<\/strong> This <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears to be a major shift in how Google is synthesizing information via its AI-generated answers. The change could pose new visibility and attribution (and even more rank tracking) challenges. Other ongoing challenges:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Traffic from AI Overviews to websites seems minimal and typically leads to few or zero clicks.<\/li>\n<li>Organic click-through rates are dropping.<\/li>\n<li>You are also (again) competing with Google, which just rolled out links in AI Overviews to its own search results.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The big picture.<\/strong> Google\u2019s John Mueller confirmed that <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seroundtable.com\/google-ai-overviews-core-updates-37933.html\">Google AI Overviews are impacted by core updates<\/a>. BrightEdge\u2019s latest finding seems to be further confirmation of that. Mueller said last August:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cThese are a part of search, and core updates affect search, so yes.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What to do?<\/strong>\u00a0Here are two areas to focus on, according to Jim Yu, founder and executive chair of BrightEdge:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Create complementary content that answers the next logical question(s). Your content addressing follow-up questions now has better chances of being cited even if it doesn\u2019t rank in the top 10 regular results.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t choose between ranking well <strong>or<\/strong> appearing in AI Overviews \u2013\u00a0aim for <strong>both<\/strong>. Track your presence in both areas to get a complete picture of your search visibility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s next. <\/strong>We will continue to watch how Google\u2019s AI Overviews and core updates impact organic traffic (that \u201cnecessary evil\u201d which makes it possible for websites to exist and Google to have all the fresh, helpful content it needs).<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Dig deeper.
