“#Drew Barrymore on her new talk show: \u2018The rule book is on fire\u2019<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n In August 2019, Drew Barrymore shot an audition tape for a hoped-for talk show in front of a live studio audience.<\/p>\n

Thirteen months and one pandemic later, \u201cThe Drew Barrymore Show\u201d premieres Monday, with Barrymore taking center stage in her studio \u2014 and interacting with a virtual audience vis a vis COVID-19 protocols.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s really an opportunity for innovation right now,\u201d Barrymore, 45, tells The Post.\u00a0\u201cThe rule book is on fire.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barrymore says \u201cThe Drew Barrymore Show,\u201d airing weekdays at 9 a.m. ET on CBS, was well-prepared for its launch amidst the current television climate of shooting remotely.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you think things may not happ<\/a>en you take different risks when unprecedented times force you to think outside the box,\u201d she says. \u201cWe call our audience our \u2018virtual friends\u2019 who I can talk to and build a community with. I really talk to our crew like they\u2019re our [in-studio] audience. I want life and cacophony and noise and energy in and around the show. I tell them, \u2018Please join in, be loud, say something if you want, laugh if you feel like it. This is not a hushed set.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s encouraged to be the exact opposite.\u201d<\/p>\n

The show will combine familiar elements such as (remote) celebrity interviews \u2014 this week\u2019s guests include Reese Witherspoon, Charlize Theron, Jane Fonda, Adam Sandler and Billy Porter \u2014 with segments including \u201cDrew\u2019s News<\/a>,\u201d in which Barrymore takes viewers behind the headlines.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m an obsessive information, news and pop-culture junkie,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen I aggregate so much information for myself, I find a lot of stories so fascinating beyond that front section of the newspaper or the top headline. I think [\u2018Drew\u2019s News\u2019] is a mixed bag, which is how I like digesting the information of the world \u2014 human interest, weird, fun facts. It feels like a newspaper where, to be a responsible citizen, you have to understand what\u2019s happening in the front section but also in sports, metro, arts and science<\/a>s, business and even obituaries \u2014 which make me want to go and live a better life because someone else did and it\u2019s very inspiring.\u201d<\/p>\n

The show\u2019s online presence includes four digital docuseries<\/a>: \u201cDrew\u2019s Movie Nite,\u201d \u201cThe Art of the Interview,\u201d \u201cDrew\u2019s Cookbook Club\u201d and \u201cThe Making Of The Drew Barrymore Show,\u201d which tracks the backstage run-up to Monday\u2019s launch.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s my way of avoiding the polish, like, \u2018Hi, I\u2019m here!,\u2019 \u201d she says. \u201cThese are such extraordinary times and circumstances and there\u2019s so much that takes to get to this moment. I thought it might be more informative to tell that journey rather than just see what\u2019s out in front. I\u2019m so much a part of what this show is, and will be, and as a consumer I want to know why these decisions were made, why this person was picked as a host, what\u2019s the reasoning behind this?<\/p>\n

\u201cThis has been such a wild endeavor that I decided to make a personal, behind-the-scenes documentary about what it\u2019s all been like \u2014 so if you really want to know, this is a good way to find out,\u201d she says. \u201cPeople will see us come out of the gate with even more transparency and inclusion because this show has my name on it \u2014 but what\u2019s most compelling for me is what I\u2019m trying to make for other people.<\/p>\n

And, Barrymore says, she hopes to inject her well-known brand of humor and positivity into the show.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love optimism and happiness but I\u2019m really desperate to show that happiness is a choice and the choice isn\u2019t always easy,\u201d she says. \u201cIt isn\u2019t always available and it\u2019s not just a silly, blind happiness, it\u2019s the one we work for.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to fight for it,\u201d she says. \u201cI can\u2019t think of a better reward.\u201d<\/p>\n
