TOHO<\/strong>\u2018s Mid-Term Plan for 2028 is out<\/a> (PDF), revealing its future targets and its assessment of its 2025 Mid-Term Plan.<\/span><\/p>\n

When it comes to its IP and Anime<\/a> Business, one of those targets is an uptick in production. This will partly manifest as an increase in anime broadcasts, from 14 \u201cseasons\u201d in FY2 2025 to 30 by 2032. TOHO says that one of these seasons lasts for three months, so they can be viewed as single cours.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Along with this, it aims to increase TOHO animation<\/strong>\u2018s employee count from 60 (the number is inclusive of three TOHO CO., LTD employees) in FY2 2025 to 120 for 2032.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe will reinforce our organizational framework and expand our talent base, enhancing production studio capabilities to develop and distribute high-quality content and IP worldwide,\u201d says TOHO, adding that it \u201cwill increase operating profit of the IP and Anime business by 200% or more\u201d from its FY2 2025 numbers by upping its overseas business and game<\/a>s revenue.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to increasing its yearly anime broadcasts and staff, TOHO wants to expand its overseas offices and \u201cenhancing licensing functions in each region,\u201d while also improving its e-commerce platform and bringing \u201cIP-theme<\/a>d cafes inspired by popular anime and characters.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u201cdevelopment and release of digital games based on GODZILLA and our hit anime series<\/a>\u201d is another thing that\u2019s brought up. While not confirmed to be the targets of this initiative, the \u201chit\u201d titles that are featured in the report include Haikyu!!<\/em>, My Hero Academia<\/em>, Dr. STONE<\/em>, Jujutsu Kaisen<\/em>, Spy x Family<\/em>, Kaiju No.8<\/em>, Frieren: Beyond Journey\u2019s End<\/em>, and The Apothecary Diaries<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

These titles were notably highlighted in TOHO\u2019s financial report<\/a> (consolidated version here<\/a>, both PDF) for the fiscal year ended February 28, 2025 (which, like the 2028 mid-term plan, was published on April 14, 2025), where it was mentioned that they made a \u201csignificant contribution to business performance\u201d through distribution rights and merchandising rights royalties.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 TOHO is turning IP business and Anime into its own segment from FY2 2026, separate from the Film business segment.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 TOHO\u2019s list of highlighted key subsidiaries and affiliates that it acquired during its Mid-Term Plan 2025 includes animation studio Science<\/a> SARU<\/strong>, TOHO animation (it became a subsidiary and changed its name from TIA Inc. to TOHO animation STUDIO Inc.), and anime distributor GKIDS.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 It also listed some companies that it had acquired a partial equity stake in, including CoMix Wave Films<\/strong>,<\/span>
Bandai Namco Holdings<\/strong>, and Orange<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 In Home Entertainment, \u201csales grew\u201d for anime like Haikyu!!: The Dumpster Battle,<\/em> Frieren: Beyond Journey\u2019s End<\/em>, and Umamusume: Pretty Derby<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Haikyu!!: The Dumpster Battle<\/em>, Detective Conan: The Million-dollar Pentagram<\/em>, and My Hero Academia: You\u2019re Next<\/em> were noted as having \u201cfavorable\u201d sales when it came to \u201csouvenir programs\u201d and character goods. Meanwhile, the character goods sales of anime like Haikyu!!<\/em> and Jujutsu Kaisen<\/em> \u201cgrew<\/span>
significantly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 TOHO is expecting \u201coperating revenue of \u00a540,900 million in the Production and Distribution business\u201d from productions that it\u2019s collaborating on and distributing, as part of its fiscal year (ending February 28, 2026) forecast. \u2022 Jujutsu Kaisen<\/em>, My Hero Academia<\/em>, and Haikyu!!<\/em> are TOHO\u2019s main weapons when it comes to increasing revenue for its IP and Anime business, specifically \u201cthrough broad use\u201d of these titles. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 TOHO animation will \u201cinvest\u201d in titles like Dr. Stone Science Future<\/em>, The Apothecary Diaries<\/em>, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes<\/em>, Kaiju No.8<\/em>, My Hero Academia Final Season<\/em>, Spy x Family<\/em> Season 3, and Frieren: Beyond Journey\u2019s End<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Operating revenue from TOHO\u2019s anime business \u201cand its share of consolidated operating revenue\u201d rose from 24.2 billion yen (~US$169.69 million) in the 2023 financial year (a growth of 9.9%) to 55.4 billion yen (~US$388.4 milion) in the 2025 financial year (17.7&). In the 2024 financial year, the number was 46.5 billion yen.

\u2022 Haikyu!!: The Dumpster Battle\u00a0<\/em>and Spy x Family Code White\u00a0<\/em>were such hits during TOHO\u2019s previous fiscal year that it recorded a loss of 23% in theatrical release revenue.<\/span><\/p>\n
