But is that actually true?<\/p>\n<p>And if it is, how quickly are CPCs inflating?<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly, there\u2019s no simple answer.<\/p>\n<p>To get closer to the truth, we\u2019ll explore three reliable data sources \u2013 and explain why this question matters more than most advertisers realize.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-problem-of-cpc-inflation\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_problem_of_CPC_inflation\"><\/span>The problem of CPC inflation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you advertise on Google, CPC inflation should be high on your list of concerns. Why?<\/p>\n<p>Because rising CPCs directly erode advertising performance.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if CPCs increase by 5% this year, your budget will deliver 5% fewer clicks \u2013 assuming all other variables stay constant.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at a simple example to illustrate:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img because costs go up.<\/p>\n<p>In most cases, the only way to keep up is to increase total ad spend by that same 5%.<\/p>\n<p>That might work \u2013 if you can also raise your prices by same rate as market inflation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But if CPCs rise faster than inflation, your margins start to erode.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the danger of CPC inflation \u2013 and it often goes unnoticed.<\/p>\n<p>So, how big is this problem really?<\/p>\n<p>To answer that, we\u2019ll look at three key data sources that reflect CPC trends over time:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Google annual reports<\/strong>: Alphabet, as a public company, reports changes in CPCs as part of its revenue breakdown.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Third-party tools (WordStream)<\/strong>: WordStream collects data from thousands of Google Ads campaigns and publishes annual CPC benchmarks by industry.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Owned ad accounts<\/strong>: At our agency, we track exact search terms over several years across multiple industries to measure CPC fluctuations at the most granular level.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cpcs-from-alphabet-s-annual-reports\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"CPCs_from_Alphabets_annual_reports\"><\/span>CPCs from Alphabet\u2019s annual reports<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To better understand CPC trends, we extracted data from Alphabet\u2019s annual reports (Form 10-K) covering the years 2018 to 2024.<\/p>\n<div 1984px\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>This table shows the year-over-year percentage change in two key metrics:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The volume of paid clicks.<\/li>\n<li>Average CPCs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For example, the 2024 column represents the change compared to 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cAverage\u201d column has been added for reference and does not <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear in the original reports.<\/p>\n<p>What stands out is that in three of the six years (2024, 2023, and 2021), both paid clicks and CPCs increased.<\/p>\n<p>In those years, Google effectively earned more by generating more clicks and charging more per click.<\/p>\n<p>The most dramatic shifts occurred between 2020 and 2021, a period marked by COVID-driven growth in online activity.<\/p>\n<p>As demand surged, competition rose \u2013 and so did CPCs.<\/p>\n<p>Looking at the broader trend, the volume of paid clicks increased every year, averaging a 14.5% annual growth rate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But CPCs only rose in three out of the six years, with an average annual increase of just 2.33%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is surprisingly low \u2013 I expected a more consistent upward trend of at least 3% per year.<\/p>\n<p>However, there are important limitations to this data.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Alphabet\u2019s reports likely cover more than just Google Search \u2013 other platforms like <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube<\/a> and the Display Network may be included.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the figures reflect global data, which could be skewed downward by lower CPCs in emerging markets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also possible that the growing use of automated bidding tools has contributed to slower CPC inflation overall.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Dig deeper: Dealing with Google Ads frustrations \u2013 Poor support, suspensions, data<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>WordStream publishes an annual industry benchmark report on Google Ads CPCs, drawing insights from over 17,000 campaigns.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Below, I\u2019ve compiled their reported CPC data for U.S.-based advertisers from 2021 to 2024.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter columns show the average CPC for each industry by year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The final column reflects the compound annual growth rate (CAGR), which is calculated to measure how quickly CPCs are rising on a smoothed annual basis.<\/p>\n<p>To put this in context, the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/inflation-rate-by-year-7253832\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">average U.S. inflation rate<\/a> over the past five years \u2013 measured by the consumer price index (CPI) \u2013 is 4.24%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Industries with a CPC CAGR above this benchmark are highlighted to show which are seeing CPC inflation outpacing <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> economic inflation.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, 12 of the 23 industries analyzed have CPCs growing faster than the CPI.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That means the majority of industries are experiencing CPC inflation above the national average price inflation.<\/p>\n<p>When averaging across all industries, the overall CAGR is 3.18% \u2013 slightly below the CPI.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, this average is heavily impacted by an outlier: the Finance and Insurance sector, which shows a sharp -12.68% decline.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This anomaly may be the result of reporting errors, data shifts, or other unknown variables.<\/p>\n<p>If we exclude this outlier, the average CAGR rises to 4.02%, and the median across all industries sits at 4.37%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Both are in line with or slightly above CPI, reinforcing the conclusion that CPCs for most industries are increasing at \u2013 or faster than \u2013 the rate of Here\u2019s what we found:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>2.33%<\/strong>: The average annual CPC increase from Google\u2019s annual reports (2019\u20132024), covering all markets, platforms, and industries.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&gt;4%<\/strong>: The CAGR from WordStream benchmarks across all industries (after removing outliers) over the last four years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>11.75%<\/strong>: The average CAGR from our managed accounts, based on the top search term in each of our seven highest-spend accounts (average time frame: 9 years).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Based on years of experience, my gut feeling has always been that CPCs are rising rapidly \u2013 and our own data backs that up with an 11.75% increase.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But when we look more broadly, that growth moderates: WordStream shows 4%, and Google claims it\u2019s just 2.33% \u2013 lower than CPI inflation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So, which number should we trust?<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-limitations-of-this-approach\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_limitations_of_this_approach\"><\/span>The limitations of this approach<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Using aggregated data \u2013 like WordStream\u2019s benchmarks or Google\u2019s reporting \u2013 comes with limitations. These sources may not be comparing apples to apples year to year.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if an account switches to a new ad manager who slashes CPCs by shifting strategy, this might appear as a market trend \u2013 but it\u2019s really a management change. Aggregated data can\u2019t always control for that.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also the issue of selection bias. <\/p>\n<p>WordStream\u2019s data may skew toward accounts that use their tools, introducing confounding variables. <\/p>\n<p>Perhaps a tool update improved performance, or a price hike caused certain advertisers to leave. Their data might reflect advertiser behavior as much as market dynamics.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, our internal data is tightly controlled, so we understand the full context. <\/p>\n<p>However, the tradeoff is sample size \u2013 seven accounts aren\u2019t enough to reflect the entire market. So while our data may be more precise, it\u2019s less generalizable.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-conclusion\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span>Conclusion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>All three data sources confirm that CPCs are rising. The question is \u2013 by how much?<\/p>\n<p>And more importantly, what\u2019s happening in your own account?<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the number that matters most.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If your CPCs are rising faster than inflation or benchmarks, you\u2019ll need to respond \u2013 whether by:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Raising your own prices.<\/li>\n<li>Exploring more cost-effective ad strategies,.<\/li>\n<li>Even shifting platforms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Benchmarking your CPC growth against CPI or industry data can help you understand whether your account\u2019s trajectory is justifiable \u2013 or unsustainable.<\/p>\n<p>One final thought: If your CPCs are rising faster than inflation, then it\u2019s cheaper to acquire a customer today than it will be tomorrow \u2013 and likely cheaper than it will ever be.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Major brands like Coca-Cola understood this long ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The brand equity they built decades ago still pays dividends today \u2013 and it was far cheaper to build back then.<\/p>\n<p>Advertising is an investment.
