\n\tAmazon Prime Video has canceled Clean Slate<\/em>, which was television legend Norman Lear\u2018s final completed project, after one season. Series<\/a> stars Laverne Cox and George Wallace, as well as their fellow co-creator Dan Ewen, broke<\/a> the news<\/a> in a guest column on Deadline.<\/p>\n

\n\tClean Slate premiered on Prime Video on February 6; by \u201cthe end of March\u201d it was canceled, the trio wrote. Cox, Wallace and Ewen called the series a \u201clabor of love,\u201d and a \u201cseven-year effort\u201d that \u201cwas gone in a puff of server exhaust.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPerhaps a little bit of a shot there on how Amazon conducts its business.<\/p>\n

\n\tIt was Cox and Wallace who brought the show to Lear<\/a>. Lear, the sitcom dynamo (for decades and decades), died in December 2023 at 101 years old. Lear was the comedy genius behind All in the Family<\/em>,\u00a0Maude<\/em>,\u00a0Good Times<\/em>,\u00a0The Jeffersons<\/em> and Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Hollywood Reporter<\/em> reached out to Amazon Prime Video with a request for comment on the cancellation news; we did not immedia<\/a>tely hear back.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn its review, THR<\/em> called Clean Slate<\/em> a \u201cwarm, well-meaning and not especially funny comedy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWallace\u00a0played Harry Slate, the owner of the Slate Family Car Wash (get it? Clean Slate<\/em>?) in Mobile, Alabama. After 23 years of estrangement, Harry is excited to welcome back the child \u201che thought was his sad, insecure son,\u201d Daniel Fienberg wrote in his review. \u201cInstead, he greets confident, general<\/a>ly happ<\/a>y Desiree (Laverne Cox), who has left behind a career in the New York City art world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe reunion doesn\u2019t actually go down in the sort-of classic sitcom-y way one might expect.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHarry is taken aback for maybe 30 seconds, accidentally misgenders his daughter one or twice. But then he\u2019s fairly accepting, with the joke\/twist being that he\u2019s much more outraged to learn that Desiree is vegetarian,\u201d Fienberg continued. \u201cArchie Bunker, he is not.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd All in the Family<\/em> this was not.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
