{"id":663907,"date":"2025-04-20T01:05:13","date_gmt":"2025-04-19T22:05:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/congress-has-questions-about-23andme-bankruptcy\/"},"modified":"2025-04-20T01:05:13","modified_gmt":"2025-04-19T22:05:13","slug":"congress-has-questions-about-23andme-bankruptcy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/congress-has-questions-about-23andme-bankruptcy\/","title":{"rendered":"Congress has questions about 23andMe bankruptcy"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p id=\"speakable-summary\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3The leaders of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce said they are investigating how 23andMe\u2019s bankruptcy might affect customers\u2019 data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Representatives Brett Guthrie, Gus Bilirakis, and Gary Palmer (all Republicans) <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/d1dth6e84htgma.cloudfront.net\/04_17_2025_E_and_C_Letter_to_23and_Me_5c8d4032a7.pdf\">sent a letter <\/a>Thursday to the genetic testing company\u2019s interim CEO Joe Selsavage asking a number of questions about how 23andMe will handle customer data if the company is sold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The letter also says that some customers have reported problems deleting their data from the 23andMe website, and it notes that direct-to-consumer companies like 23andMe are <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly not covered by the protections of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGiven the lack of HIPAA protections, the patchwork of state laws covering genetic privacy, and the uncertainty surrounding what h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ens to customer information should a sale of a company or customer data and information transpire, we are concerned that this trove of sensitive information is at risk of being comprised,\u201d the representatives write.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">23andMe, which <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/cybersecurity\/23andme-settles-data-breach-lawsuit-30-million-2024-09-13\/\">settled a data breach lawsuit<\/a> for $30 million last year, filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in March, with co-founder and CEO Anne Wojciki saying she was resigning to become a private bidder for the company.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
