\n\tDavid Cronenberg isn\u2019t rushing to be the first one at the theater to see the latest blockbuster.<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring a recent chat with Jim Jarmusch for Interview Magazine<\/a><\/em>, the director-writer-actor, known as a leader of the body horror genre, shared that he doesn\u2019t prefer the communal experience of going to the movies<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\n\tAfter noting that part of the reason was because he watches \u201ceverything with subtitles\u201d due to his hearing and that \u201cparking is not so great in Toronto,\u201d he expanded on why he \u201cstopped going to the cinema many years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI only see movies in real theaters every once in a while, mostly at film festivals, and I\u2019ve found that the projection isn\u2019t always so great,\u201d Cronenberg explained. \u201cI remember being in Venice onstage with Spike Lee and some others. He was talking about the Cathedral of Cinema, the whole religious aspect of it. And I said, \u2018Spike, I\u2019m watching\u00a0Lawrence of Arabia<\/em>\u00a0on my watch, and there are a thousand camels there. I can see every one of them.\u2019 I was joking, but what I meant was, I don\u2019t find the cinema experience all that great. Maybe it\u2019s because I\u2019m older. I don\u2019t feel that communal thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Shrouds<\/em> filmmaker is also seemingly thrilled that filmmaking technology<\/a> has progressed over the years, allowing for more creative control.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI do find that people talking about streaming can be very passionate in the way that we were passionate in the movie theater after we saw a film,\u201d Cronenberg said. \u201cSo it\u2019s different, but I don\u2019t think it\u2019s worse. I also don\u2019t miss working with film. The cutting and editing was a nightmare for me. It was very restrictive. You have so much more control now. And of course, we are control freaks to a certain extent, if you\u2019re making a film.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe added, \u201cI have nostalgia for the old films, but I don\u2019t have that Spielberg-esque need to actually shoot on film.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
