\n Tyra Banks says she was \u201cshocked\u201d when asked to host \u201cDancing With the Stars,\u201d back Monday for its 29th season on ABC.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never thought I would get that inquiry,\u201d Banks, 46, tells The Post. \u201cI was probably just as shocked as you were. It took me a while to wrap my head around it. After about a month I consulted with my mom and said, \u2018What do you think?\u2019 She thought I was ridiculous. She was like, \u2018Why are you taking so long to get back to them? Of course you should do it. It\u2019s one of the biggest shows on TV. It\u2019s part of Americana.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

Banks replaces Tom Bergeron, the show\u2019s original host, who was dismissed in July after 15 years on the \u201cDWTS\u201d ballroom floor. ABC said it wanted to \u201cembark on a new direction\u201d; Bergeron\u2019s co-host, Erin Andrews, was also let go.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m 46, and all the research on me is that my main audience is 10 to 20 years younger than me, and that 25-35 demographic is very important to the show,\u201d says Banks, who\u2019s also an executive producer. \u201cI\u2019m connected to TikTok with my motivation initiative and I\u2019m learning about what resonates with the younger generation \u2026 and how we can bring that generation to watching \u2018Dancing With the Stars\u2019 \u2014 how to get them to watch with their moms, aunties and grandparents.\u201d<\/p>\n

Banks says she\u2019s not daunted by replacing Bergeron on the still-solid ABC warhorse \u2014 particularly with her on-camera experience creating and hosting \u201cAmerica\u2019s Next Top Model,\u201d her daytime talk show \u201cTyra\u201d (2005-2010) and on \u201cAmerica\u2019s Got Talent\u201d (she replaced Nick Cannon for two seasons.)<\/p>\n

\u201cI tend not to get nervous about hosting,\u201d she says. \u201cTo be honest, I\u2019m nervous when I have to act and remember lines. I want to make sure I can bring something different and special and unique [to \u2018DWTS\u2019] \u2026 something that can add some pixie dust and come at it from a different point of view \u2014 and that\u2019s what my initial hesitation was about.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never want to be a \u2018host-for-hire,\u2019 \u201d she says. \u201cTom Bergeron was like an empire with his brand and his comedic timing. What can I do to add to something that was so genius? My mom and me are sitting down and talking about all the different elements I can bring to the show. I\u2019ll be fine; that doesn\u2019t mean I won\u2019t make mistakes or read the Teleprompter backwards, but live TV is about mess-ups and mistakes and calling them out when they happ<\/a>en.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that\u2019s important.\u201d<\/p>\n

This season\u2019s celebrity hoofers include Carole Baskin of \u201cTiger King\u201d renown, rapper Nelly, \u201cOne Day at a Time\u201d star Justina Machado and actress Anne Heche.<\/p>\n

The show will look a bit different due to the COVID protocols. Banks and the dancing partners will be on the show\u2019s ballroom set but will be social<\/a>ly distanced; married dancer couples will live separately during the season to limit contact with other cast members. Meanwhile, \u201cDTWS\u201d vet Derek Hough joins Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli at the judge\u2019s table with Len Goodman, who\u2019s in London and unable to travel<\/a> to the US, contributing remotely.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe coordination can be a little challenging, even if some of the COVID protcols are intense,\u201d Banks says. \u201cBut it\u2019s a good kind of positive challenge.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
