They would also save importers an estimated $1.3 trillion (\u20ac1.14 trillion) globally each year, Ember found. The think tank refers to this trio of technologies as \u201celectrotech.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1031\" data-end=\"1417\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cutting_reliance_on_US_Russian_fossil_fuels\"><\/span><strong>Cutting reliance on US, Russian fossil fuels<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"562\" data-end=\"761\">Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 exposed one of Europe\u2019s greatest vulnerabilities \u2014 its reliance on imported fossil fuels to power its vehicles, heat its buildings, and drive its industries forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"763\" data-end=\"1029\">Three years on, Europe is still hooked on foreign supplies of oil and gas. Many European states cater to the majority of their primary energy needs from these fossil fuel imports. But in the process, it has shifted its dependencies across the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1031\" data-end=\"1417\">The EU imported more oil and gas <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=EU_imports_of_energy_products_-_recent_developments&amp;oldid=564016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">from the US<\/a> than any other country in 2024.\u00a0 Concerns over this dependence have grown since Donald Trump\u2019s reelection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1684\" data-end=\"1918\">Trump\u2019s tariff wars and rising regional conflicts have placed global trade under <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2025-04-01\/supply-chain-latest-trade-uncertainty-hits-a-record-high?embedded-checkout=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">greater threat<\/a> than at any time since the Second World War. Faced with increasingly volatile global markets, \u201celectrotech offers the fastest escape route,\u201d said Bond.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1684\" data-end=\"1918\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Looking_east\"><\/span>Looking east<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"304\" data-end=\"560\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid adoption of electric vehicles would make the largest single contribution to Europe\u2019s energy independence, the report found. By cutting oil use in road transport, EVs could slash imports by a third. Scaling up solar and wind adds another 23%. Replacing imported fossil fuels in buildings with heat pumps contributes a further 14%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"304\" data-end=\"560\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2024, China was by far the largest exporter of solar panels, batteries, and electric vehicles to the EU. <\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"304\" data-end=\"560\">However, even though boosting Europe\u2019s share of electrotech might deepen the region\u2019s reliance on China, this poses a less significant threat to energy security than depending on fossil fuel imports, the report found.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"304\" data-end=\"560\">Fossil fuels must be imported and burned without pause. Electric technologies, however, need just one import \u2014 of a solar panel or battery, for instance \u2014 to secure energy for years, if not decades.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"304\" data-end=\"560\">Rapid adoption of electric technologies will also be crucial to meeting the EU\u2019s target of carbon neutrality by 2050.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
