One potential fix? Harnessing nuclear fusion \u2014 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the same atom-colliding reaction that powers the Sun and stars.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p>While not yet proven commercially, fusion energy could provide Europe with a vital source of safe, locally produced, always-on clean power. Another plus is that future fusion power plants will likely run on abundant fuels like deuterium and tritium, which aren\u2019t confined to specific geographies.<\/p>\n<p>Francesco Sciortino, co-founder and CEO of German startup Proxima Fusion, believes fusion energy can complement wind and solar power and become a \u201cdecisive building block\u201d for Europe\u2019s energy security.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFusion holds the potential to fundamentally transform the way we think about energy, changing the world from a place that\u2019s controlled by those with reserves of oil and gas, to one where <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> lets countries control their own fate,\u201d he told TNW.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper channel-cta\">\n<div class=\"ica-text\">\n<p class=\"ica-text__title\">40% off TNW Conference! These ring-shaped machines use\u00a0powerful magnetic fields to contain super-hot plasma, creating the conditions for fusion reactions to occur. It\u2019s a technology in which Europe already has a head start.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEurope has an incredible strength in magnetic confinement fusion, with around twice the number of researchers and large-scale [fusion] devices than the US,\u201d said Sciortino.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proxima \u2014 the first company to spin out from the Max Planck Institute of Plasma Physics in Germany \u2014 is building a type of magnetic confinement device called a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stellarator<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This machine differs from the more common tokamak design at the heart of major international projects like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ITER<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in France and <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c80e86d1kl3o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STEP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the UK.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While more complex to build, \u200b\u200bstellarators have several advantages over tokamaks. They need less power to operate and make the plasma easier to control. This stability is critical for a viable fusion energy plant.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Europe is a world leader in this kind of fusion technology. Germany hosts the most advanced stellarator, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wendelstein 7-X. That machine laid the foundation for Proxima\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stellaris reactor design<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, revealed in February.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stellaris is set to be completed in just six years. The machine will lay the foundation for Proxima\u2019s first 1GW fusion reactor, which the company hopes will power up sometime in the 2030s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proxima is one of dozens of fusion energy startups racing to commercialise the technology, many of which are Europe-based. The best-funded include the UK\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tokamak Energy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Germany\u2019s <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/c9112c79-51aa-4e66-bd23-77cbfad9b321\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marvel Fusion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_future_of_fusion_energy\"><\/span>The future of fusion energy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a cliche that fusion technology is always \u201c30 years away,\u201d but 70% of experts believe we\u2019ll have a fusion device powering the grid by 2035, a Fusion Industry Association <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fusionindustryassociation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/2024-annual-global-fusion-industry-report.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found last year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If those predictions come to pass, fusion could become an important part of Europe\u2019s renewable energy mix \u2014 and one with distinct advantages. Unlike wind or solar, fusion would provide continuous power. Unlike fossil fuels, much of which is <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/cache\/infographs\/energy_2022\/bloc-2c.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">imported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from countries like Russia and the US, fusion is clean and could be homegrown, boosting energy security.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, with the US leading in private investment in fusion energy, Sciortino warned that Europe may lose its advantage and urged governments to support emerging startups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is an important moment for Europe \u2014 a moment when we have the chance to make choices that will define the coming decades, and a chance to seize the lead in the global race to commercial fusion,\u201d he said. \u201cEurope cannot afford to squander the opportunity; it must invest in companies that are working towards our continent\u2019s energy security and sovereignty.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>European sovereignty will be a hot topic at<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/41IbD3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>TNW Conference<\/span><\/a><span>, which takes place on June 19-20 in Amsterdam.
