Boaty McBoatface then descended to the bottom of a giant indoor tank at the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Southampton<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea was to test how Aquark\u2019s quantum tech \u2014 which must be completely isolated from external disturbances to function \u2014 would fare in the temperatures and pressures of an underwater environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"post-image post-mediaBleed aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1413235 js-lazy\" alt=\"boaty-mcboatface\" width=\"600\" height=\"572\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2025\/04\/aquark-quantum-boaty-mcboatface-1.jpg\"\/><figcaption>Boaty Mcboatface with its quantum payload being lowered into the test tank. The tech can also be used to measure minute variations in gravity caused by different densities in the seabed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr Alex Phillips, head of marine autonomous and robotics systems at NOC, believes the technology has the potential to make a \u201csubstantial contribution to underwater navigation and seabed imaging.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_does_Aquarks_%E2%80%9Ccold_atom%E2%80%9D_quantum_sensing_work\"><\/span><b>How does Aquark\u2019s \u201ccold atom\u201d quantum sensing work?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aquark cools atoms \u2014 typically from rubidium, a soft, silvery-white metal \u2014 to near absolute zero using lasers to create what\u2019s known as a cold atom \u201ctrap\u201d. At these ultra-low temperatures, the atoms slow down and take on quantum properties.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These quantum atoms are extremely sensitive to external forces such as gravity, acceleration, or rotation. By analysing those forces, scientists can measure acceleration, magnetic fields, rotation, gravity, and time with far greater precision than classical devices such as accelerometers, atomic clocks, or gravimeters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold atom traps form the foundation of quantum sensors \u2014 a bit like how a chip forms the basis of a quantum computer. These sensors could transform everything from air traffic control to underground exploration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists have been trapping atoms for decades, using <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">magnetic fields<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But during his PhD, Dragomir found a way to trap atoms without magnetic fields at all.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This translates to systems that are smaller, lighter, cheaper, and more energy-efficient than existing ones, the company <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previously told TNW<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
