{"id":665000,"date":"2025-04-24T14:39:10","date_gmt":"2025-04-24T11:39:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/lots-of-rhetoric-little-reality\/"},"modified":"2025-04-24T14:39:10","modified_gmt":"2025-04-24T11:39:10","slug":"lots-of-rhetoric-little-reality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/lots-of-rhetoric-little-reality\/","title":{"rendered":"Lots of rhetoric, little reality"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div class=\"article-gallery lightGallery\">\n<div data-thumb=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/tmb\/2025\/tourism.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/scx2.b-cdn.net\/gfx\/news\/hires\/2025\/tourism.jpg\" data-sub-html=\"Credit: Pixabay\/CC0 Public Domain\">\n<figure class=\"article-img\">\n            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/800a\/2025\/tourism.jpg\" alt=\"Tourism\" title=\"Credit: Pixabay\/CC0 Public Domain\" width=\"800\" height=\"530\"\/><figcaption class=\"text-darken text-low-up text-truncate-js text-truncate mt-3\">\n                Credit: Pixabay\/CC0 Public Domain<br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>A new article led by Griffith University argues that the term nature positive is being adopted more for political rhetoric and less for any real-life improvement in nature conservation, posing a new risk to biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p>The commentary, &#8220;Nature positive rhetoric, risk and reality: sector-scale political ecology at CBDCOP16&#8221; <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s44185-025-00087-5\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in <i>njp Biodiversity<\/i>, explores the tourism sector as an example.<\/p>\n<p>The team, led by Emeritus Professor Ralf Buckley with co-authors from universities in Australia, Chile, China and Japan, analyzed the fine-scale political processes in the lead-up to CBD COP16, the 16th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, which started in late 2024 and resumed in early 2025.<\/p>\n<p>They distinguish &#8220;small-t tourism&#8221;\u2014such as visitors and mobile tours in national parks\u2014from &#8220;Big Tourism,&#8221; which consists of multi-billion-dollar global corporations and political associations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Only 0.01% of the global tourism sector makes net positive contributions to conservation,&#8221; Professor Buckley said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Big Tourism, which is largely owned by the US$13 trillion private equity sector, has net negative effects via land grabs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the researchers, few tourism enterprises make net positive contributions to conservation, and &#8220;nature positive&#8221; terms were being used for &#8220;marketing greenwash, to delay and avoid environmental fees and regulations, and to lobby for land grabs in public protected areas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Professor Buckley suggests Australia has adopted &#8220;nature positive&#8221; political terminology, but in practice has failed to implement past promises to establish a new independent Environment Protection Agency.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These findings are very timely in the lead-up to the Australian federal election, given the importance of environmental concerns to the electorate, but the very low performance by both major parties,&#8221; Professor Buckley said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Despite nature positive political rhetoric, in reality the government significantly weakened its flagship environmental legislation just two days before the start of the election caretaker period.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__more p-4\">\n<p><strong>More information:<\/strong><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRalf C.
