Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened to the 39-year-old \u201cThe Simple Life\u201d star and her peers at schools like these.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a catch-up on #BreakingCodeSilence.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_the_troubled_teen_industry\"><\/span>What is the troubled teen industry?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>According to the Breaking Code Silence website, the troubled teen industry is \u201ca vast and highly profitable network of programs and facilities that advertise treating, rehabilitating or reforming troubled youth.\u201d Conversion therapy and rehab programs can fall under this category as well, although it\u2019s most associated with teens who act out against their parents or in school. Custody of the minors is turned over by parents to the schools, often staffed by former \u201ctroubled teens,\u201d in the hopes that their kids will get straightened out; but the now-adults say they were broken down.<\/p>\n<p>Synanon, a drug rehabilitation program turned violent cult founded by Charles Dederich Sr. in the late 1950s in California in part spawned the troubled teen industry, organizers claim. One former cult member, Mel Wasserman, started the CEDU program that counted Hilton as a student. Attack therapy, where students are encouraged to tear each other down in a group setting, was a feature at CEDU, which was shuttered in 2005.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_much_is_the_industry_worth\"><\/span>How much is the industry worth?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The private programs, partially funded with government cash, come out of the pockets of desperate parents. The schools are overwhelmingly based in Utah, with its vast wilderness landscapes fit for rugged outdoor experiences. According to a 2015 study out of the University of Utah, \u201cThe Family Choice Behavioral Healthcare Interventions Industry\u201d raked in $328,702,999 in 2015, with most of the cash coming in from out of state.<\/p>\n<p>The Salt Lake Tribune reported that 12,000 kids have collectively been sent to Utah, home to about 100 programs, in the past five years, with each sojourn costing at least $30,000.<\/p>\n<p>Although the alt-schools are meant to educate, survivors claim class was beside the point: \u201cWe were building other camps, basically doing manual labor all day long,\u201d Hilton claims in the doc. \u201cIt was constant yelling at, boot camp-style.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16291895\"><img alt=\"Paris Hilton, now 39.\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Paris Hilton, now 39.<\/span><span>Getty Images for Paris Hilton<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_exactly_happened_to_Paris_Hilton\"><\/span>What exactly happened to Paris Hilton?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cMy parents were scared and they didn\u2019t want their reputations to be ruined,\u201d says Hilton, who admitted to sneaking out to nightclubs since she was 15 years old, in the tell-all flick. \u201cI was sent away to be hidden,\u201d the celeb claims, charting her path through places she calls<\/p>\n<p>\u201cemotional growth schools\u201d located \u201cin the middle of nowhere,\u201d including Ascent, Cascade and CEDU. At Provo, Paris claims staff \u201cgot off on torturing children and seeing them naked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The young rebel often ran away. \u201cThey shut down highways, they shut down airports,\u201d says Paris\u2019 sister, Nicky.<\/p>\n<p>The last stop on the tough-love train for Paris was Provo Canyon School in Utah, where she stayed for 11 months in 1999 until her 18th birthday. She says in the movie, \u201c[it was] the worst of the worst,\u201d calling her time there \u2014 where she alleges she was abused, forced to take drugs, and s<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>ped down and placed in solitary confinement \u2014 \u201csomething out of \u2018One Flew Over the Cuckoo\u2019s Nest.\u2019\u2009\u201d She blames that point in her life for later shacking up with less-than dudes, and for her obsession with becoming a self-made billionaire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt made me not trust anyone, not even my own family,\u201d says Hilton, who said she has a recurring nightmare of when she was kidnapped and taken to Provo Canyon School in the middle of the night by two \u201ctransporters\u201d as her parents looked on.<\/p>\n<p>Hilton reveals that she suffers from \u201ctrust issues,\u201d \u201cfear\u201d and \u201canxiety\u201d as a result of her time there in the film, and has posted online a few times using the #BreakingCodeSilence hashtag.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16291891\"><img alt=\"Paris Hilton shared a photo from her time at Provo Canyon School in the new YouTube doc, \"This is Paris.\"\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Hilton shared a photo from her time at Provo Canyon School in the new YouTube doc, \u201cThis is Paris.\u201d<\/span><span>YouTube<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Provo Canyon School said in a previous statement that the facility was sold in 2000 and is under new ownership. School officials said they could not comment on the past owners but do not \u201ccondone or promote any form of abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_Code_Silence\"><\/span>What is Code Silence?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>At some of the schools and programs, \u201cCode Silence\u201d is a punishment where students are told to not speak in order to \u201csocially isolate\u201d students, according to the Breaking Code Silence website.<\/p>\n<p>Breaking Code Silence is encouraging alumni of the troubled teen industry to share testimonials online.
