\n\tBill Maher still defends his White House visit with President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring the latest episode of his weekly HBO series<\/a>, Real Time<\/em>, the host sat down with Al Gore where the former vice president admitted that he understood why Maher accepted the invitation to meet with Trump, recalling how he himself met with Trump<\/a> ahead of the Republican president\u2019s first term.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s just that [when] somebody comes with an offer and says, this person who\u2019s been dominating our life, whether you like him or not, for 10 years like nobody ever has in history, would you like to see it up close?\u201d Maher said on the show. \u201cWould you like to see the Trumpadopoulos up close? You know, I mean, of course, who wouldn\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tEarlier in the interview, the duo discussed Gore\u2019s recent speech opening San Francisco Climate Week, in which the 2000 Democratic presidential candidate criticized the Trump administration and made headlines for creating parallels between the actions of the Republican president and his team in their second term and what happ<\/a>ened in the early days of Nazi Germany.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI understand very well why it is wrong to compare Adolf Hitler\u2019s Third Reich to any other movement,\u201d Gore said. \u201cIt was uniquely evil, full stop. I get it. But there are important lessons from the history of that emergent evil.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe added, though, \u201cIt was [J\u00fcrgen] Habermas\u2019 mentor, Theodore Adorno, who wrote that the first step in that nation\u2019s descent into hell was, and I quote, \u2018the conversion of all questions of truth into questions of power.\u2019 He described how the Nazis, and I quote again, \u2018attacked the very heart of the distinction between true and false.\u2019 End quote. The Trump administration is insisting on trying to create their own preferred version of reality.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Friday\u2019s show, Maher said, \u201cI just think Nazi is a hard word to use with nuance. So, when you bring that word out, you know, I feel like they\u2019re the GOAT of evil, and it just conflates.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGore defended his speech, though Maher argued that \u201cthe side of the country that voted for Trump, [when] they hear Nazi, they just go, \u2018Oh, you\u2019re calling us Nazis.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe added, \u201cFirst of all, it\u2019s a bit of a false premise, as bad as they are. And also it just says to them, \u2018Well, you just hate us.\u2019 One thing I\u2019ve learned in recent years is that the one thing that\u2019s more powerful than money is hate.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tTheir conversation came after Maher responded to Larry David\u2019s satirical \u201cMy Dinner With Adolf\u201d essay that mocked the comedia<\/a>n\u2019s visit with Trump where he said the president was \u201cgracious and measured,\u201d and not like the \u201cperson who plays a crazy person on TV.\u201d During a Thursday interview with Piers Morgan, the Real Time<\/em> host said his essay was \u201cinsulting to six million dead Jews\u201d\u00a0and that \u201cit\u2019s an argument you kind of lost just to start it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cLook, maybe it\u2019s not completely logically fair, but Hitler has really kind of got to stay in his own place,\u201d Maher said Thursday. \u201cHe is the GOAT of evil. We\u2019re just going to have to leave it like that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tIn David\u2019s \u201cMy Dinner With Adolf\u201d essay, he satirically recalled having dinner \u201cwith the world\u2019s most reviled man, Adolf Hitler.\u201d He added, \u201cI had been a vocal critic of his on the radio from the beginning, pretty much predicting everything he was going to do on the road to dictatorship. No one I knew encouraged me to go. \u2018He\u2019s Hitler. He\u2019s a monster.\u2019 But eventually I concluded that hate gets us nowhere. I knew I couldn\u2019t change his views, but we need to talk to the other side \u2014 even if it has invaded and annexed other countries and committed unspeakable crimes against humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe guest essay pulled similar verbiage from\u00a0Maher\u2019s monologue from his April 11 episode where he recounted his visit with Trump and Kid Rock. During the visit, Maher said, he \u201cnever felt I had to walk on eggshells around\u201d the president. <\/p>\n

\n\tHe added, \u201cHonestly, I voted for [Bill] Clinton and [Barack] Obama, but I would never feel comfortable talking to them the way I was able to talk with Donald Trump. That\u2019s just how it went down, make of it what you will.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
