\n\tIt\u2019s not exactly the National Portrait Gallery in London. Or the Brooklyn Museum in New York. Or even the Portland Art Museum. But at long last, after a two-year wait, Los Angeles has finally found a home for Paul McCartney\u2019s historic snapshots from the Beatles\u2019 first American invasion.<\/p>\n

\n\tMcCartney\u2019s photos \u2014 candid, wide-eyed, sometimes a bit blurry \u2014 are now on view at the Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills through June 21. And unlike at those earlier, fancier stops, in L.A., the prints have price tags. You can actually buy one.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut first, for those unfamiliar with McCartney\u2019s globe-trotting photo exhibit, a little backstory.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn late 1963, just before the Beatles boarded Pan Am Flight 101 to tape their world-shaking\u00a0Ed Sullivan Show<\/em>\u00a0debut, McCartney got himself a new camera \u2014 a sexy little 35mm Pentax SLR. He took it everywhere and photographed just about everything: the mop tops goofing around on the plane, the Fab Four strolling through Central Park, their post-Sullivan jaunt to Miami.<\/p>\n

\n\tThen McCartney app<\/a>arently forgot all about the pictures. They were boxed up and stored away\u2026 for the next 60 years.<\/p>\n

\n\tFlash forward to the pandemic, when Sir Paul \u2014 like the rest of us \u2014 started rummaging through closets. That\u2019s when he and his team rediscovered the long-lost contact sheets, negatives and color slides. The result was\u00a0Eye of the Storm<\/em>, a photo exhibit that premiered at London\u2019s National Portrait Gallery in 2023. It was such a hit that McCartney decided to take the pictures on the road. Along with Brooklyn and Portland, the show has visited museums in Virginia, Tokyo and \u2014 its current stop \u2014 San Francisco.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut for L.A., McCartney did something different. Rather than offer the exhibit to The Broad or LACMA or the Annenberg, he and his team assembled a slightly different batch of images from the same period \u2014 including some previously unseen \u2014 retitled the collection\u00a0Rearview Mirror<\/em>, and brought it to the Gagosian, where the works could be more than admired. They could be acquired.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe 36 works on display \u2014 some solo images, some contact sheets featuring dozens of frames \u2014 are being sold in ultra-limited editions of six to ten signed prints each, priced between $15,000 and $85,000 (yes, per photo).<\/p>\n

\n\tThink of it as concert merch for billionaires \u2014 if your idea of a band tee involves authentication and a custom frame.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWell, not quite,\u201d says Joshua Chuang, the gallery\u2019s director. \u201cThere\u2019s some overlap with the images from\u00a0Eye of the Storm<\/em>, but even those images look different in our show. And, yes, the big difference is the fact that you can purchase them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHonestly, if you can afford it, why not? Although better known for his musical talents, McCartney turns out to have been a pretty fabulous photographer. And he and his Pentax were certainly in the right place at the right time. \u201cThis is the only time I can think of where someone of Paul\u2019s cultural impact took very good pictures of the exact moment you\u2019d want him to be taking pictures,\u201d notes Chuang.<\/p>\n

\n\tAt the time, of course, the Beatles were among the most photographed humans on Earth \u2014 which is also what makes these photos so illuminating. They offer a Paul\u2019s-eye view of what the Beatles saw when they landed in America. \u201cThere\u2019s almost a sense in his pictures of a shared awe about what was happening to them,\u201d Chuang says. \u201cLike even they couldn\u2019t believe it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAnother reason to check out the exhibit? It\u2019s likely never going to happen again. \u201cPaul\u2019s not trying to launch another career as a fine art photographer,\u201d Chuang says. \u201cThese are limited editions \u2014 six, eight, maybe ten copies \u2014 and that\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
