For a combined population of just over six million, the region is the birthplace of a remarkable range of innovations, startups, and scaleups.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collectively, the three states are renowned for strong digital infrastructure, tech-savvy populations, global mindsets, and government policies that support innovation. Individually, each country boasts its own impressive attributes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Estonia leads Europe in density of unicorns (privately held startups valued at over $1bn). Several trace their roots to the \u201cSkype Mafia\u201d of entrepreneurs that emerged from the video chat pioneer, including Playtech, Wise, and Bolt. Sign up now!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lithuania has bred its own impressive flock of unicorns: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vinted<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Nord Security, Baltic Classifieds Group, and the most recent addition, Flo Health \u2014 which last year became Europe\u2019s first femtech unicorn. The country is also the number one fintech hub in the EU by number of licensed companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latvia, meanwhile, was named Europe\u2019s most startup-friendly country in 2021 by Index Ventures. Currently, on-demand printing company Printful is the nation\u2019s only unicorn, but the ecosystem is growing fast. Since 2019, the country\u2019s startups have grown in enterprise value by 5.3x \u2014 the highest increase in the region, according to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dealroom data<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With such fertile ground for scaleups across the region, picking just five for TECH5 was a challenge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our judges selected them after analysing their growth, impact, and future potential. In no particular order, let\u2019s meet them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Vok_Bikes\"><\/span>Vok Bikes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Estonia\u2019s <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/vokbikes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vok Bikes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> develops electric cargo bikes with three key qualities: smart, safe, and sustainable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Designed for city use and streamlined deliveries, the four-wheel drive bikes have a range of 100km and a top speed of 25km\/h. According to Vok, the system saves users up to 70% annually in maintenance expenses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acceleration, braking, and reversing are integrated into the pedals, while the fine-tuned torque control reduces fatigue. The design also supports extended climbing with heavy loads, without overheating the system. Further features include regenerative braking, intelligent power disruption, online diagnostics, and a sw<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>able battery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Customers include IKEA, which uses Vok Bikes for last-mile deliveries, alongside many delivery, transportation, and logistics companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last month, the Tallinn-based company <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/vokbikes.com\/articles\/how-vok-beats-the-van-by-64-a-total-cost-of-ownership-breakdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that a Vok XL bike has an ownership cost that\u2019s 64% lower than a Ford Transit Connect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEven resale value holds up,\u201d the scaleup said. \u201cAfter five years, the Vok still retains ~22% of its original value.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"PVcase\"><\/span>PVcase<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lithuania\u2019s <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pvcase.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PVcase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a global leader in solar project software. The company\u2019s end-to-end platform covers the entire development of solar farms, from site selection and design to yield optimisation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The approach aims to streamline solar project design, cutting costs and timelines. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By accelerating deployments of solar energy, PVcase contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating the impacts of climate change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since launching in 2018, the Kaunas-based business has delivered software to customers in nearly 80 countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWith 2 terawatts of solar already installed globally, PVcase tools empower our customers to design the next terawatts 10 times faster,\u201d the scaleup told TNW. \u201cThis exponential increase in solar design speed is not just an industry statistic; it\u2019s a lifeline for our planet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Investors have been impressed by the progress. In 2023, PVcase secured a cash injection of $100mn (\u20ac88mn), bringing its total funding to over $123mn (\u20ac109mn).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Jeff_App\"><\/span>Jeff App<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latvia\u2019s <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jeff-app.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeff App<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> supports people with limited access to traditional financial services \u2014 the \u201cunderbanked.\u201d The Riga-based business offers alternative credit scores in emerging economies, extending the pathways to financial inclusion.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Founded in 2019, Jeff also operates as a lead generation service. The fintech says it has over 8 million users, with each one undergoing creditworthiness and fraud detection checks. By partnering with Jeff, banks and lenders can tap into new markets of borrowers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeff also collects, analyses, and models data from a host of sources, including smart devices, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a>, and behavioural analytics. Clients can access the insights through the scaleup\u2019s API.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, Jeff secured $2mn (\u20ac1.77mn) in late-seed funding to further develop its services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFinancially, we can now pursue new product categories that offer much greater market size and a faster path to becoming a household name in emerging markets,\u201d said Toms Niparts, the scaleup\u2019s co-founder and CEO.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Roofit_Solar\"><\/span>Roofit Solar<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another Estonian flagbearer, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/roofit.solar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roofit Solar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> delivers fully-integrated solar panels that blend innovation and elegance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The panels combine Nordic design with premium materials and efficiency. The solar cells are integrated into high-quality metal sheets. The panel then form a solar roof tailored to a home\u2019s aesthetic design. Using AI, the system also optimises energy purchases, sales, and storage \u2014 maximising the customer\u2019s savings and revenues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company emerged from the founders\u2019 dissatisfaction with the appearance of traditional solar panels. In 2016, they launched Roofit Solar to prove solar energy doesn\u2019t need to compromise on looks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In January, the company unveiled a new slimmed-down design: the Velario Slim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur other products are already high performers when it comes to energy efficiency, but the compact Velario Slim will allow even more roof space to be covered and more free energy to be generated for property owners under the same roof,\u201d said Andres Anijalg, the scaleup\u2019s CEO.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Turing_College\"><\/span>Turing College<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our second Lithuanian finalist, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.turingcollege.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turing College<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provides online courses that empower users to upskill or reskill \u2014 on their terms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Vilnius-based edtech emerged in 2021 with a new approach to learning. Each course is designed to equip busy professionals with in-demand tech skills. The methodology involves short intensive sprints inspired by the Agile method, which is used by industry leaders including Google, Apple, and Facebook.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, the scaleup was awarded a \u20ac2.5mn grant from the European Innovation Council (EIC).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis grant is pivotal for us,\u201d said Lukas Kaminskis, Turing College\u2019s founder and CEO. \u201cIt allows us to invest in solutions that both simplify mentor work and boost learner experience and outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile there\u2019s widespread agreement on AI\u2019s potential to transform education, what that transformation will look like is still unclear. Our team has been searching for the answer over the past eight years, and we believe we\u2019ve found it \u2014 at least for digital skills training.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_next_for_the_Baltic_scaleups\"><\/span>What\u2019s next for the Baltic scaleups?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Baltic scaleups will compete for the TECH5 title with rivals from across Europe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The challengers from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Southern Europe<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">France<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benelux<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Nordics<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DACH<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have also been selected.
