{"id":667418,"date":"2025-05-07T01:12:11","date_gmt":"2025-05-06T22:12:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/the-handmaids-tale-stars-elisabeth-moss-and-max-minghella-on-that-shattering-betrayal\/"},"modified":"2025-05-07T01:12:11","modified_gmt":"2025-05-06T22:12:11","slug":"the-handmaids-tale-stars-elisabeth-moss-and-max-minghella-on-that-shattering-betrayal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/the-handmaids-tale-stars-elisabeth-moss-and-max-minghella-on-that-shattering-betrayal\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018The Handmaid\u2019s Tale\u2019 Stars Elisabeth Moss and Max Minghella on That Shattering Betrayal"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>[This story contains spoilers from season six, episode seven of <em>The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/em>, \u201cShattered.\u201d]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cIt was Nick who told me everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<em>The Handmaid Tale<\/em>\u2018s June (Elisabeth Moss) first heard those words while hiding in a closet with Nick (Max Minghella), as High Commander Wharton (Josh Charles) informed fianc\u00e9e Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) that his son-in-law helped him thwart what could have been a debilitating attack on Gilead High Commanders at Jezebel\u2019s, orchestrated by June and the Mayday resistance group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe fifth episode in the final season of the Hulu <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> ended on that cliffhanger moment as viewers watched June internally digest what she just heard. This week\u2019s sixth hour, \u201cShattered,\u201d then picked up in that closet. The episode quickly zoomed over to Jezebel\u2019s to show viewers the devastating consequences of Nick\u2019s betrayal of June: All of the Jezebels (women who are forced to be sex slaves for High Commanders) are brutally shot and killed by Gilead officers. Janine (Madeline Brewer) is the only one who is spared, due to her relationship with High Commander Bell (Timothy Simons).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe massacre of the Jezebel\u2019s women is a scene of shocking violence for the dystopian series, and the execution of so many women is a haunting vision June imagines when she\u2019s then told by Nick what h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cHave you ever had a moment where you hear something or learn something about someone and you can\u2019t unsee it? You can\u2019t go back,\u201d asks Moss when speaking to <em>The Hollywood Reporter <\/em>about this point of no return between lovers June and Nick. \u201cEverything changes in that moment for June. She cannot ever see him in the same way again. I think he completely shatters her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<em>Handmaid\u2019s Tale <\/em>viewers had a big reaction after last week\u2019s episode, \u201cSurprise,\u201d when finding out that Nick had ratted out June\u2019s resistance plan. But Minghella wasn\u2019t bracing for impact heading into season six\u2019s release. \u201cI don\u2019t really mind what they think of Nick morally,\u201d he tells <em>THR<\/em>. \u201cI just hope [viewers] enjoy the narratives. Whether they have different feelings about me afterwards is not something I have much control in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThat\u2019s not to say that Minghella doesn\u2019t care deeply for his character. \u201cHe\u2019s nothing like me, we\u2019re quite different. He\u2019s much more stoic; I\u2019m a sort of mess of a person (<em>laughs<\/em>). I don\u2019t talk anything like Nick; Nick speaks and moves in a very specific way,\u201d he says. \u201cBut I can relate to this character [throughout the series]. I feel there is some temper between us. I understand him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn the episode, Nick quickly clocks June\u2019s stunned reaction, and he confronts her about what she\u2019s chosen to ignore about him all along. He accuses her of turning a blind eye on his elite role in the fascist Gilead regime when it benefits her to do so. When she realizes that Nick is just like the evil men who run Gilead, he responds: \u201cAnd you love me. So what does that make you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tJune then walks away from Nick. It\u2019s a moment that Nick acknowledges may be for good in a later conversation with Rita, where he leans into June thinking he\u2019s a self-serving monster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cShe\u2019s completely brokenhearted,\u201d Moss tells <em>THR<\/em>. \u201cShe\u2019s also so mad at herself that she ignored all the signs \u2014 that she should have seen it, that she should have known, that she should have not fallen for it or believed in him. All of that is going through her head in the same moment. And then thinking about those women and not being able to ever get that image out of her head, and not knowing about Janine and whether or not [she\u2019s alive]. Her mind is going a mile a minute.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:3000px\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  \">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((2000\/3000)*100%);\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-hollywoodreporter-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/175484_0018RT.jpg?w=3000\" alt=\"\" data-lazy-srcset=\"\" data-lazy-sizes=\"\" height=\"2000\" width=\"3000\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-padding-tb-025\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"a-font-secondary-s lrv-u-margin-r-025\">June (Elisabeth Moss) walks away from Nick (Max Minghella) in \u201cShattered\u201d after finding out that his betrayal led to the deaths of the women at Jezebel\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"a-font-accent-uppercase-xs lrv-u-color-grey-dark\">Disney\/Steve Wilkie<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tJune has been free from Gilead since escaping in season four. She\u2019s now a refugee and rebellion fighter  who has reunited with husband Luke (O-T Fagbenle), friend Moira (Samira Wiley), former Martha Rita (Amanda Brugel) and the Mayday resistance fighters trying to take Gilead down, as she and Luke continue to fight to get her oldest daughter, Hannah (Jordana Blake), back. When June returns and tells Luke that Nick knew about the plan because of her, Luke finally expresses his true feelings about June and Nick\u2019s Gilead affair, which led to the birth of June\u2019s youngest daughter, Holly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cDon\u2019t be in love with a fucking Nazi, how \u2019bout that!\u201d Luke tells his wife.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFagbenle has been carrying around his own feelings about the love triangle at the heart of <em>The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/em> for some time. The actor accepts there is a trauma love bond between June and Nick, but as far as he\u2019s concerned, \u201cIt\u2019s pathological on many levels,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s so blindingly obvious that Nick is part of a fascistic regime and this entire time, the only time he\u2019s acted against that was for his own selfish interest because he was in love with a woman. That doesn\u2019t erase the fact that you can\u2019t get promoted up the ranks of Gilead unless you\u2019re doing some really dark things. You don\u2019t get promoted up the ranks because you\u2019re baking nice pastries!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt\u2019s something that June, as well as viewers, have been guilty of overlooking, thanks to Minghella\u2019s performance and the chemistry between the pair as June and Nick\u2019s love story has unfolded over six seasons. \u201cJust look at her performance in that scene,\u201d Fagbenle tells <em>THR<\/em> of Moss. \u201cIt\u2019s brilliant, the look on her face. I\u2019m always blown away by her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAfter this, things can\u2019t be the same for June when it comes to Nick, says Fagbenle, who thinks it\u2019s about time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThis entire journey for Luke, and myself as a person, I\u2019ve been so surprised that more people don\u2019t see that,\u201d says Fagbenle of Nick\u2019s role as a Commander. \u201cIt\u2019s an interesting quirk of humanity that we\u2019re willing to whitewash a bunch of things around a person because we love them and we think they\u2019re hot or we think they\u2019re the person we want to fall in love with. I think it\u2019s really interesting on both the political level and a psychological level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCo-showrunners Eric Tuchman and Yahlin Chang have also compared June\u2019s relationship with the two men in her life. \u201cWith Nick it\u2019s more lusty and passionate, and with Luke it\u2019s the love of a super strong attachment to a husband who has stood by you,\u201d Chang tells <em>THR<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCommander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) channels some of these confronting feelings in the episode, when he accuses June of being blind to trust Nick because of his \u201csmoldering\u201d gaze.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThere are certain things about Nick that June is blind to and that our viewers \u2014\u00a0and we as writers \u2014\u00a0are blind to because we\u2019re invested in this romance. And that is that Nick is a Commander in Gilead, that\u2019s the truth of it,\u201d says Chang. \u201cBecause for Nick to have risen up to be part of the Gilead power regime \u2014 to be an Eye from the beginning and then all the way through to becoming a Commander \u2014 he has done some bad things, and we haven\u2019t shown them and so it was convenient to forget. But one of the themes in our story the season is that there is no such thing as a good Gilead Commander. If you\u2019re a man and you\u2019re powerful in Gilead, it means you are touched by some of that Gilead corruption. You just are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWhen June returns to Mayday headquarters, it\u2019s Moira who comforts her and who understands why June fell in love with Nick \u2014 a romance, as Fagbenle has previously pointed out \u2014 that was borne out of and bonded by trauma. Perhaps that\u2019s why Luke stops short of leaving June and their marriage. If anything, the Nick betrayal and June\u2019s revelation afterwards bring the husband and wife closer, as they vow to never lose sight of what they are fighting for: their daughter Hannah, who is now a wife-in-training and still living under Gilead tyranny.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:3000px\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  \">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((2000\/3000)*100%);\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-hollywoodreporter-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/175446_0303RT.jpg?w=3000\" alt=\"\" data-lazy-srcset=\"\" data-lazy-sizes=\"\" height=\"2000\" width=\"3000\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-padding-tb-025\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"a-font-secondary-s lrv-u-margin-r-025\">Luke (O-T Fagbenle) and June (Elisabeth Moss) in \u201cShattered.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"a-font-accent-uppercase-xs lrv-u-color-grey-dark\">Disney\/Steve Wilkie<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe episode later reveals that Janine is now a handmaid for High Commander Bell, who has been sexually abusing her ever since she arrived at Jezebel\u2019s, and that even Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) can\u2019t get to Janine. \u201cNick is not the person June fell in love with, and as much as she can mourn the loss of the person she fell in love with, it won\u2019t trump the loss of the women at Jezebel\u2019s,\u201d says Moss of June\u2019s turning point. \u201cBut there is pain there, too. I\u2019m not going to say that there isn\u2019t complexity there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tInstead of pulling away in misery, however, the events push June to plan an even bigger Mayday coup. She plots their biggest resistance ploy yet \u2014 with the help of Lawrence, their Canadian ally Mark Tuello (Sam Jaeger) and Mayday \u2014 to enlist every handmaid and ally to use the upcoming Gilead wedding between Serena Joy and High Commander Wharton as a cover to slyly attack every Gileadean person in attendance. \u201cThose Commanders and those Wives are going to be so busy eating and dancing and having the time of their fucking lives that they will never see us coming,\u201d says June at the end of the hour, ushering in what is sure to be a blessed evening for episode eight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t***<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<em>The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/em> releases new episodes Tuesdays on Hulu.
