\n The number of New York\u00a0 parents asking that their kids only attend class remotely this year has jumped past 40 percent just days before the start of the new COVID-19-battered academic year, the Department of Education said Monday.<\/p>\n

A total of 422,190 \u2014 or 42 percent \u2014 of city kids have now opted for the format, new numbers show.<\/p>\n

The remote-only requests have risen by 158,000 in the past four weeks, according to DOE figures.<\/p>\n

That compares to the 579,698 students \u2014 or roughly 58 percent \u2014 who are now planning to\u00a0 alternate between attending class inside their school\u2019s building and remote instruction.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s down sharply from 74 percent in mid-August.<\/p>\n

Mayor de Blasio has staunchly backed a partial reopening of city schools, arguing that working parents need scheduling relief and that kids will benefit from building instruction.<\/p>\n

After weeks of negotiation, Hizzoner struck a deal with the United Federation of Teachers this month that established a framework for a return to classrooms in the nation\u2019s largest school district.<\/p>\n

But union chief Michael Mulgrew said Monday that City Hall was failing to uphold central elements of the agreement and that he did not think schools were ready to resume operation next Monday.<\/p>\n

Mulgrew said staffing concerns for the new year have yet to be adequately addressed and that principals do not have nearly enough teachers to meet their imminent needs.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are having a major staffing challenge in our school system right now,\u201d he said in a press conference. \u201cWe\u2019ve been talking about this for weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also urged the DOE to shore up its testing and tracing procedures in schools with confirmed COVID-19 cases.<\/p>\n

Roughly 21 percent of city teachers app<\/a>lied for and were granted coronavirus exemptions that will allow them to work exclusively from home this upcoming year.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
