\n Sports desk: Fans Reject Woke Revolution<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gallup data show \u201cpublic devotion to America\u2019s great cultural pastimes has collapsed in the last year, as political turmoil has infected what used to be an escape,\u201d The Federalist\u2019s Tristan Justice reports. The \u201csports industry now boasts a negative image among US adults: 30 percent see the sports industry positively, compared to 40 percent reporting a negative image.\u201d That\u2019s a huge drop from a year ago, when it \u201cenjoyed a net-positive 20 percent rating.\u201d And nonwhite Americans \u201cdropped their support for the industry more steeply than did white Americans.\u201d Such are \u201cthe consequences of the industry embracing the all-encompassing woke revolution,\u201d with players \u201cnow being forced to explain why they stand for the National Anthem rather than take a knee.\u201d<\/p>\n

Libertarian: States Don\u2019t Need a Bailout<\/strong><\/p>\n

States \u201choping for a federal bailout are likely to be on their own for the foreseeable future,\u201d leading the likes of The New York Times to warn of a \u201cdire fiscal crisis,\u201d observes Reason\u2019s Eric Boehm. Alaska \u201cchopped resources for public broadcasting,\u201d the Times frets, and New York City \u201cgutted a nascent composting program.\u201d Many states canceled pay hikes for teachers and others. Huh? \u201cThat doesn\u2019t sound like a crisis,\u201d says Boehm \u2014 merely proper budgeting when revenues are down. Besides, the \u201cpicture for state budgets looks less pessimistic now,\u201d with several watchdogs predicting lower shortfalls than thought earlier in the pandemic. Even in the worst case, there\u2019s \u201clittle indication\u201d that states need the $1 trillion Democrats demand. And a bailout would only give them \u201cless incentive to address\u201d future budget woes.<\/p>\n

Culture critic: The Problem With \u2018Cuties\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

The backlash in America over \u201cCuties,\u201d a Netflix film chronicling preteen girls coming of age, \u201cbaffled\u201d its French filmmakers, who describe the project as \u201ca social<\/a> commentary against the sexualization of young children,\u201d reports National Review\u2019s Madeleine Kearns. But the problem isn\u2019t the message. It\u2019s the choice to depict actual minors \u201cin ways that, in any other context, would be considered reprehensible, if not criminal\u201d \u2014 like abusing animals to show the horrors of animal cruelty. And while \u201cthe moral outrage of Americans at the first whiff of pedophilia was deeply reassuring,\u201d it\u2019s a shame the \u201cline was crossed\u201d at all. Kearns concludes: \u201cThe makers of \u2018Cuties\u2019 didn\u2019t merely simulate the cultural degradation and abuse of children\u201d \u2014 they enacted it.<\/p>\n

Media watch: Tucker Corners CNN<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tucker Carlson \u201ctorments CNN, often unfairly,\u201d argues The Washington Post\u2019s Erik Wemple, but this time, the populist Fox News<\/a> host has proof of bias: \u201can audio recording of CNN anchor Chris Cuomo coaching then-Trump lawyer Michael Cohen in person on how to answer tough questions about the Stormy Daniels scandal.\u201d Specifically, Cuomo told Cohen to insist that his only motive in paying Daniels hush money was that he did it for Trump. The anchor also suggested Cohen warn, \u201cIf you can\u2019t prove that I got paid back by Trump or the campaign, it is slander and defamation for you to say that I did,\u201d and then attack any questioners\u2019 motives. Cuomo, in other words, \u201capp<\/a>ears to be recommending, or at least validating, the deployment by Cohen of a media slam in an upcoming interview.\u201d Even if Cuomo was trying \u201cto lure Cohen on his program,\u201d this is \u201cparticularly cynical and soulless behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n

Religion beat: A Rapper for God<\/strong><\/p>\n

At First Things, Liel Liebovitz profiles Young Rechnitz, an Orthodox Jewish rapper whose single Yeshivishe Mozart \u201cdelivers a torrent of one-liners that are as thought-provoking as they are hilarious.\u201d Rechnitz\u2019 lines weave the \u201cjoys and mysteries of religious life,\u201d even as they also make for great rap. \u201cAt ease in his skin, cheered on by his community and propelled forth by his faith, Young Rechnitz felt comfortable enough to reach out to pop culture at large, take a few sick beats and stitch together a song that reminds us that the secular and the religious, the profound and the profane \u2014 all are parts of God\u2019s magical creation.\u201d<\/p>\n
