\n\tForty years ago, French director Andr\u00e9 T\u00e9chin\u00e9\u2019s Paris-set\u00a0Rendez-Vous<\/em>\u00a0debuted here, with Binoche starring as a young actress who finds herself entangled in romances with three men, all while chasing her dream of making it on the big screen.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tTHR<\/em>\u2019s review of the romantic drama commended her \u201ccomplex,\u201d \u201cnot one-dimensional\u201d performance, affirming that Binoche \u2014 who had app<\/a>eared in a few small films before this point \u2014 \u201cradiates a power that transcends her sex-kitten character\u201d: \u201cShe\u2019s a bright new talent who\u2019s as alluring as Charlotte Rampling or Dominique Sanda.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film proved to be a launching pad for the actress. \u201cI was born at the Festival de Cannes,\u201d she later recalled. Binoche went on to win an Academy Award for her supporting role in 1996\u2019s\u00a0The English Patient<\/em>\u00a0and has returned to Cannes 10 times, earning the title of best actress in 2010 for her performance in Abbas Kiarostami\u2019s romance\u00a0Certified Copy<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn 1985, I walked up the [Palais] steps for the first time with the enthusiasm and uncertainty of a young actress,\u201d Binoche said at the time of the jury announcement. \u201cI never imagined I\u2019d return 40 years later in the honorary role of president of the jury.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n
