\n Los Angeles County Sheriff\u00a0Alex Villanueva on Monday challenged NBA star LeBron James to match and double the reward money being offered for information on the gunman who ambushed and shot two deputies over the weekend.<\/p>\n

Speaking with KABC Radio on the\u00a0John Phillips Show, Villanueva said the reward money reached $175,000 \u2014 a combination of donations of\u00a0$100,000 from the\u00a0county and $75,000 from two private individuals.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis challenge is to Lebron James. I want you to match that and double that reward,\u201d Villanueva said. \u201cI know you care about law enforcement. You expressed a very interesting statement about your perspective on race relations and on officer-involved shootings and the impact that it has on the African-American community.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I app<\/a>reciated that,\u201d he continued. \u201cBut likewise, we need to appreciate that respect for life goes across all professions.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Los Angeles Lakers star has been one of the most vocal professional athletes to speak on social<\/a> issues and to condemn\u00a0police misconduct. After\u00a0Jacob Blake was shot multiple times by officers in Wisconsin last month, James said Black people in America are \u201cterrified\u201d of police misconduct.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know people get tired of hearing me say it, but we are scared as Black people in America,\u201d James said following the Lakers\u2019 Game<\/a> 4 win over the\u00a0Portland Trail Blazers last month. \u201cBlack men, Black women, Black kids, we are terrified.\u201d<\/p>\n

He earlier tweeted his frustrations about police shootings.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd y\u2019all wonder why we say what we say about the Police!! Someone please tell me WTF is this???!!! Exactly another black man being targeted,\u201d James wrote. \u201cThis s\u2014 [sic]\u00a0is so wrong and so sad!! Feel so sorry for him, his family and OUR PEOPLE!! We want JUSTICE.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was not clear if James was aware of Villanuena\u2019s challenge. Messages to the Lebron James Foundation were not immediately returned.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s see what he does,\u201d the sheriff said. \u201cI\u2019ll be very curious to see what his response is, if any.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
