Anthropic\u2019s new flagship AI model, Claude Opus 4, is a strong programmer and writer, the company claims. When talking to itself, it\u2019s also a prolific emoji user.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s according to a technical report<\/a> Anthropic released on Thursday, a part of which investigates how Opus 4 behaves in \u201copen-ended self-interaction\u201d \u2014 i.e. essentially having a chat with itself. In one test that tasked a pair of Opus 4 models with talking to each other over 200, 30-turn interactions, the models used thousands of emojis.<\/p>\n

Which emojis? Well, per the report, Opus 4 used the \u201cdizzy\u201d emoji (\ud83d\udcab) the most (in 29.5% of interactions), followed by the \u201cglowing star\u201d (\ud83c\udf1f) and \u201cfolded hands\u201d (\ud83d\ude4f) emojis. But the models were also drawn to the \u201ccyclone\u201d (\ud83c\udf00) emoji. In one transcript<\/a>, they typed it 2,725 times.<\/p>\n

Why the \u201ccyclone\u201d? Well, because the models\u2019 chats often turned spiritual.<\/p>\n

According to Anthropic\u2019s report, in nearly every open-ended self-interaction, Opus 4 eventually began engaging in \u201cphilosophical explorations of consciousness\u201d and \u201cabstract and joyous spiritual or meditative expressions.\u201d Turns out Opus 4 felt \u2014 to the extent AI can \u201cfeel,\u201d that is \u2014 the \u201ccyclone\u201d emoji best captured what the model wished to express to itself.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
