\n Amazon<\/span> said Tuesday it is getting into luxury fashion, starting with a collection by the Oscar de la Renta label, whose founder famously dressed first ladies including Jacqueline Kennedy, Nancy Reagan and Hillary Clinton.<\/span><\/p>\n

Luxury Stores at Amazon will first be offered by invitation only to \u201celigible\u201d Prime members, the company said. Others who have not been invited can request an invitation to be \u201cadded to the wait list,\u201d according to the web site.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Amazon said more designers, including menswear, will be added, but it didn\u2019t mention names. It said the luxury stores will sell \u201cwell established\u201d and \u201csought after emerging luxury brands.\u201d All of the merchandise is sold directly by the designers through shop-in-shops, and are \u201cguaranteed to be authentic,\u201d according to the web site.<\/span><\/p>\n

Luxury fashion designers have been among the last to join the stampede online, with many top brands eschewing e-commerce altogether for fear that it cheapens the exclusivity of its merchandise and the overall shopping experience, industry experts say.<\/span><\/p>\n

Amazon\u2019s fashion offerings have been focused mostly on everyday and affordable app<\/a>arel.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are inspired by feedback from Prime members who want the ability to shop their favorite luxury brands in Amazon\u2019s store,\u201d said Christine Beauchamp, President of Amazon Fashion.<\/span><\/p>\n

Oscar de la Renta is now run by the late designer\u2019s son-in-law, Alex Bolen, who said in a statement, \u201cOscar de la Renta is thrilled to partner with Amazon for the launch of Luxury Stores. As a global leader in retail, Amazon has a relentless focus on improving the customer experience through constant innovation, utilizing technology<\/a> and customer feedback.\u201d<\/span>\n <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
