We\u2019re 15 days away from the release of her sophomore album <i>Molly And Her Week of Wonders<\/i>, which means we\u2019re dangerously close to the submission deadline, and nothing is quite finished.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            \u201cI\u2019m literally editing this short film every day, and then focusing on the music,\u201d Molly tells me on a May 15 video call. She\u2019s in the courtyard of her LA apartment building, rocking a <i>brat<\/i> green henley long sleeve in the glare of the mid-afternoon sun. \u201cBeen trying to get everybody to send back their features \u2014 you know r<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ers, we\u2019re late to everything.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-271134\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            \u201cIt\u2019s just been a nightmare,\u201d she sighs. \u201cBut the best nightmare ever. Like, I don\u2019t want to wake up yet.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Part of the nightmare is self-inflicted: the 20-year-old rapper admits she\u2019s a \u201clast minute person,\u201d indecisive until she has \u201cno choice\u201d but to commit to a release, and owns that she can be \u201csuper picky\u201d with ideas and details. When I first hear a draft of <i>Molly And Her Week of Wonders<\/i> on May 8, none of the final features have come in, though she does play me an in-progress demo with Don Toliver, who she opened up for on tour with last year. Now she\u2019s a major label artist making bulldozing hip-hop that frequently pummels the listener into aural submission. Her songs can be more delicate (\u201cWhat Did I Do Today\u201d) or melodic (\u201cWindows Up,\u201d one of our top rap songs of 2024), but her tracks frequently feel like they would fit perfectly in a mix of eardrum-scraping bangers featuring contemporaries like OsamaSon and Nettspend.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Molly grew up in Fontana, California, about an hour outside of LA. She tells me she spent her early years studying artists \u201cjust as a fan\u201d in her room, when she wasn\u2019t hitting the skatepark or sketchy concerts with friends.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            \u201cI used to go to this one place in LA called The Smell and I would see crazy ass local punk bands,\u201d she laughs. \u201cI would just be in there like, 12 years old, getting my fucking piercings knocked. Even in your earbuds, these are songs to rock out to, the sort that make you carelessly headbang in public, but they explode when she performs them live.<\/p>\n<p>When I caught Molly at Rolling Loud Cali back in March, I was sandwiched between a quartet of heckling white male Zoomers and a pair of tweenage girls who whooped with glee as they documented Molly\u2019s every move. The set was excellent, every sound and image carefully honed for maximum impact \u2014 in the tightly packed crowd, her piercing sirens and clobbering drums seemed to hit even harder than those in Playboi Carti\u2019s headlining set a few hours later. Molly tells me she was heavily inspired by Scott\u2019s <i>Birds in the Trap Sing Brian McKnight<\/i>, and <i>Week of Wonders<\/i> is accordingly dense, deep, lush, synths extra glossy or translucent, kick drums rounded off just so. From the stuttering production flourishes on \u201cBRB\u201d to the groggy lurch of \u201cHonest\u201d to the children\u2019s choir harmonies undergirding \u201cStupid Money,\u201d <i>MAHWOW<\/i> carefully stitches ear candy over and around her flow. That\u2019s especially true of \u201cWhen I\u2019m Gone,\u201d where Molly\u2019s vocals fade into the song\u2019s coda like Charli XCX on \u201cTrack 10,\u201d and \u201cHandle It,\u201d a vicious subwoofer thumper that mutates with every hook.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Molly Santana\u2019s maximalist take on SoundCloud rap was already hyper-stylish, colliding soaring melodies and spitfire flows with \u201cfuturistic\u201d instrumentals that stretch the sounds of her inspirations (Chief Keef and Lil Uzi Vert, of course; but also Reptilian Club Boyz, Black Kray, and Drain Gang) into more elaborate shapes. But <i>Molly And Her Week of Wonders<\/i> marks a serious step up in her songwriting and delivery, a cohesive record with surprising emotional weight. These are still hard-hitting rap songs, but whether contemplating the state of the music industry (\u201cNot Regular\u201d) or turning over the occasional romantic pang (\u201cGlobe\u201d), Molly\u2019s more lyrically open than she has been in the past.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-271147\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left pull_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"pull_quote\"><p>There\u2019s no point in me fake swag talking, because I\u2019m where I wanted to be. I don\u2019t have to dream and tell story tales anymore.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-271139\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            \u201cWhen I was recording this album, we were in the middle of nowhere in Wyoming. The city was like, population of 200, one grocery store, so I feel like I had a lot of space to dig deep and really hear myself. This album, I\u2019m older and grown more, and I have gotten to places that I\u2019ve been wanting to be at for a long time.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cSo there\u2019s no point in me fake swag talking, because I\u2019m where I wanted to be. I don\u2019t have to dream and tell story tales anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Molly spent January in Wyoming with a crew of her go-to producers (\u201cA house full of men,\u201d she says drily), telling me it was almost like being in another country. \u201cThere were so many moose around us,\u201d she laughs. \u201cIt was not much to do. I was really just cooking and then cooking figuratively.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            Aside from \u201cBRB,\u201d a late 2024 snippet that was entirely overhauled, every song on <i>Week of Wonders<\/i> was recorded during these wintertime sessions. \u201cWhile I was in Wyoming, a lot of stuff was changing in my life, but I wasn\u2019t there to see it,\u201d she explains. \u201cI was like, \u2018What is going on? Vivid, perverse, and seriously skeptical of authority, the film was recommended to Molly by video director Stan Smith more than a year ago, though the title only came into focus after leaving Wyoming.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cIt didn\u2019t really make sense to me until I really watched the movie three times. Now, it almost feels like a mirror of my life, but at first I didn\u2019t understand,\u201d Molly says. \u201cI was like, \u2018this name is so fucking long,\u2019 and it sounds like I\u2019m gonna be here and gone in a week, like I\u2019m a one week wonder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Back in March, Molly told me she related to Valerie because, \u201cI feel like everybody\u2019s out to get me.\u201d <i>Molly And Her Week of Wonders<\/i> isn\u2019t exactly paranoid, but it\u2019s certainly guarded. On a song like last year\u2019s \u201cCall Me What You Want,\u201d Molly sounded satiated by the success she\u2019d achieved to date; nowadays, she\u2019s more focused on walking in her purpose than with the spoils of her labor.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-271142\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            \u201cI&#8217;ve been doing music for almost four years now, and I haven&#8217;t lost the rose-colored glasses for it, I love it so much, but it&#8217;s way less like romantic than I thought it was when I was younger. Really good music comes from people&#8217;s pain and insecurities and from them feeling shut away from the world, or isolated and cast out.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n             \u201cIt&#8217;s a little bit depressing, but that is the beautiful thing about music. It\u2019s so deep, but it\u2019s also so not deep, too. Like sometimes you love a song and you don\u2019t fuck with the artist. And it\u2019s a whole ecosystem of different shit, and I thought it was so much more simple when I was younger. I was just like, <i>I love these people. Hopefully one day I meet them<\/i>.
