And how is it treated?<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_mantle_cell_lymphoma\"><\/span>What is mantle cell lymphoma?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are more than 100 subtypes of blood cancers, but they are commonly divided into one of two groups. These are <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/medschool.ucla.edu\/news-article\/leukemia-vs-lymphoma-what-is-the-difference\" target=\"_blank\">based on<\/a> where they originate: leukemias develop in the bone marrow, and lymphomas develop in the lymphatic system.<\/p>\n<p>Lymphomas develop from white blood cells (lymphocytes), which circulate in the blood and lymphatic system and help fight infection.<\/p>\n<p>You may not have heard of the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cancer.ca\/en\/cancer-information\/what-is-cancer\/lymphatic-system\" target=\"_blank\">lymphatic system<\/a>, but it plays a key role in your immune response.<\/p>\n<p>The lymphatic circulatory system is responsible for transporting fluids (lymph) around your body. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/publications\/dictionaries\/cancer-terms\/def\/lymph#:~:text=Listen%20to%20pronunciation,the%20body%20in%20lymph%20vessels.\" target=\"_blank\">Lymph<\/a> comes from blood plasma, and helps remove waste from your tissues.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the lymphatic system, tissues like the spleen and thymus help produce many of the immune cells you use to fight infections.<\/p>\n<p>These cells are then housed in specialized organs called lymph nodes\u2014small pea-sized glands located throughout your body.<\/p>\n<p>Lymph nodes are kind of like the &#8220;war room&#8221; of your <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK279395\/\" target=\"_blank\">immune<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK279396\/\" target=\"_blank\">system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Your body contains hundreds of lymph nodes, and each contains millions of lymphocytes. These include the T and B cells\u2014the main fighting cells in adaptive immunity.<\/p>\n<p>If B cells in an area of the lymph node known as the &#8220;<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lymphoma.org.au\/types-of-lymphoma\/non-hodgkin-lymphoma\/aggressive-fast-growing-b-cell-nhl\/mantle-cell-lymphoma-mcl\/\" target=\"_blank\">mantle zone<\/a>&#8221; become cancerous, it is called mantle cell lymphoma.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_rare_is_it\"><\/span>How rare is it?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In 2020, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aihw.gov.au\/reports\/cancer\/cancer-data-in-australia\/contents\/blood-cancer-incidence-and-survival-by-histology-e\" target=\"_blank\">there were 330 cases<\/a> of mantle cell lymphoma diagnosed in Australia, accounting for a small fraction (5%) of lymphoma cases.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, lymphomas account for around <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canceraustralia.gov.au\/cancer-types\/lymphoma\/lymphoma-australia-statistics\" target=\"_blank\">one in 20<\/a> new cancer diagnoses. This makes mantle cell lymphoma quite rare.<\/p>\n<p>Mantle cell lymphoma is about <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aihw.gov.au\/reports\/cancer\/cancer-data-in-australia\/contents\/blood-cancer-incidence-and-survival-by-histology-e\" target=\"_blank\">three times more common in men than in women<\/a>, and mostly affects people over the age of 60.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_there_a_cure\"><\/span>Is there a cure?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Unfortunately, mantle cell lymphoma is largely <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/ajh.26523\" target=\"_blank\">considered incurable<\/a> with the therapies currently available.<\/p>\n<p>Like many cancers, mantle cell lymphoma can vary in how quickly it develops and its severity.<\/p>\n<p>As Szubanski&#8217;s cancer has been described as &#8220;fast-moving&#8221; and is already stage 4, it <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears that it is a more serious case.<\/p>\n<p>Stage 4 is the most advanced stage\u2014meaning the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/how-does-cancer-spread-to-other-parts-of-the-body-219616\" target=\"_blank\">cancer has spread<\/a> (metastasized) to other tissues.<\/p>\n<p>Treatment at this stage can be more complicated than when the cancer is caught earlier. But treatment can still help people go on to live for many years.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_does_treatment_involve\"><\/span>What does treatment involve?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In her <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> post, Szubanski said she will be receiving &#8220;one of the best treatments available (the Nordic protocol)&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the most common treatments for an aggressive lymphoma.<\/p>\n<p>The main component is &#8220;R-CHOP&#8221;\u2014a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/treatment\/drugs\/r-chop\" target=\"_blank\">combination therapy<\/a>. It involves a mixture of different drugs, including chemotherapy, to attack the cancer from multiple angles at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>Different strengths of the drugs can be used (the maximum strength is sometimes called R-maxi-CHOP).<\/p>\n<p>A stem cell transplantation may also be included in the regimen.<\/p>\n<p>How effective this treatment is will depend on many different factors, including the type and stage of the lymphoma.<\/p>\n<p>The aim is to kill as many cancer cells as possible, and therefore extend a patient&#8217;s life for as long as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Therapy also focuses on providing a high quality-of-life for patients.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_is_it_diagnosed\"><\/span>How is it diagnosed?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Szubanski&#8217;s mantle cell lymphoma was detected during a breast cancer screen where, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/magda_szubanski\/reel\/DKOM_tZSuO2\/\" target=\"_blank\">she says<\/a>, &#8220;they found my lymph nodes were up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Imaging techniques, such as a mammogram or MRI, may detect tell-tale signs of lymphoma, such as swollen lymph nodes.<\/p>\n<p>However, a biopsy\u2014<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/cancer\/in-depth\/biopsy\/art-20043922\" target=\"_blank\">a small sample of tissue from the affected area<\/a>\u2014would then be required to confirm the presence of cancer cells and identify what type.<\/p>\n<p>Blood cancer symptoms can be vague, but it&#8217;s good to know what to look for.<\/p>\n<p>As well as swollen lymph nodes, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leukaemia.org.au\/blood-cancer\/blood-cancer-signs-and-symptoms\/\" target=\"_blank\">symptoms of lymphoma<\/a> include nausea, tiredness, loss of appetite, fevers, gastrointestinal issues, unexplained weight loss, and night sweats.<\/p>\n<p>If you have any concerns, you should consult a doctor.<\/p>\n<div class=\"d-inline-block text-medium my-4\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tProvided by<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe Conversation<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"icon_open\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<svg>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<use href=\"https:\/\/medx.b-cdn.net\/tmpl\/v6\/img\/svg\/sprite.svg#icon_open\" x=\"0\" y=\"0\"\/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/svg><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"article-main__note mt-4\">\n                                                This article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license.
