\n\tJohn Mulaney is opening up about turning down the hosting gig for the 2024 Oscars.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile app<\/a>earing on Marc Maron\u2019s WTF<\/em> podcast<\/a> on Monday \u2014 the same episode in which Maron announced his podcast would be ending after 16 years \u2014 the comedia<\/a>n explained why he decided not to emcee the awards show.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWell, I was very flattered. They came to me, must have been last summer. And I knew Jimmy Kimmel wasn\u2019t gonna do it. And they offered it,\u201d he began. \u201cAnd it was honestly that I had a lot going on. And it\u2019s months and months of work.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tThe Hollywood Reporter <\/em>had reported that the first outreach had gone to Kimmel, who\u2019s already emceed the Academy Awards four times. But Kimmel ultimately said no, as he reportedly did hosting this year\u2019s Emmy awards, which also aired on ABC.<\/p>\n

\n\tConan O\u2019Brien went on to to host the 97th\u00a0Academy Awards. Mulaney sang O\u2019Brien\u2019s praises for his hosting tenure. \u201cHe came out and he not only was so funny, but he elevated the show to the point that I almost convinced myself I had seen these movies<\/a> and I\u2019d seen not a one of them,\u201d he quipped. <\/p>\n

\n\tMaron added he was also proud O\u2019Brien \u201cjust locked in and owned the fucking thing\u201d when hosting rather than resort to \u201cself-erasing,\u201d which Maron says he has noticed with O\u2019Brien because he\u2019s known him for so long and has watched him \u201cdo a joke\u201d then \u201ckind of take it apart.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tMulaney recently launched the Netflix talk show Everybody\u2019s Live with John Mulaney<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tMulaney said \u201cthere was a plan to do more\u201d and that they were \u201cfiguring it out.\u201d And though \u201cit\u2019s been very enjoyable,\u201d he also noted that he has \u201creally felt the 12 weeks in a row\u201d of doing the show.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe would scale back what we were doing if we were doing it everyday,\u201d Mulaney explained. <\/p>\n

\n\tWhen describing the talk show, Mulaney said it was an \u201cevergreen, weird, not quite any era talk show that also is trying to be a variety show in some ways.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt was more than just that we got to try a lot of bits and jokes and have guests on,\u201d he said. \u201cWe just got to try whole episodes where it felt very shoestring and episodes where we were blowing it out production-wise.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen attending the Next on Netflix event in January, Mulaney had first teased the talk show as a \u201creally fun experiment.\u201d Guests have included Pete Davidson, Henry Winkler, Bill Hader, David Letterman and Natasha Lyonne.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s one of those shows that neither Netflix nor I really needed to do,\u201d Mulaney said at the time. \u201cI never wanted to host a talk show and they were getting out of the talk show game<\/a>. It was the perfect moment to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
