\n\tHistorian and broadcaster David Olusoga, a University of Manchester Professor of Public History, has launched a production company called Hillgate\u00a0Films.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe company said on Thursday that it would \u201cfocus on developing and producing innovative and thought-provoking history-focused documentaries, formats\u00a0and\u00a0series<\/a>, both with,\u00a0and without,\u00a0Olusoga as on-screen talent.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe company launch comes with support from BBC Studios in the form of\u00a0a\u00a0development\u00a0deal\u00a0that, according to the firm,\u00a0\u201cwill\u00a0reinforce\u00a0growth ambitions in return for\u00a0a\u00a0first look [at] distribution rights.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tHillgate\u00a0Films will operate as a co-producer rather than a standalone producer \u201cto allow Olusoga to focus on fewer, more ambitious projects,\u201d the firm highlighted.\u00a0\u201cBy working as a co-producer,\u00a0Hillgate\u00a0can collaborate with\u00a0a range of\u00a0established partners on larger-scale projects while leaving Olusoga the creative freedom to concentrate on the content itself, rather than the day-to-day management of a production company.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHillgate said it has its\u00a0first\u00a0two\u00a0projects in production, but didn\u2019t disclose further details. Olusoga\u2019s work has included the BBC\u2019s\u00a0A House Through Time<\/em>\u00a0and recent landmark BBC series\u00a0Union<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tSaid Olusoga: \u201cWe\u00a0want to explore\u00a0the\u00a0untold stories from history, and we\u2019re thrilled to be partnering with\u00a0the\u00a0forward-thinking and dynamic team at BBC Studios. I\u2019m passionate about creating work that brings fresh perspectives to light, and I believe we have an incredible opportunity to do that with\u00a0Hillgate\u00a0Films.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tHe added: \u201d With a development deal\u00a0with BBC Studios in place, we\u2019re ready to grow and scale the\u00a0company and have ambitious plans for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOlusoga is joined at\u00a0Hillgate\u00a0by managing director Ben Hall, who previously served as global director of programs at Motion Content Group.\u00a0\u201cDavid\u2019s track record as a storyteller and historian speaks for itself, and I\u2019m\u00a0delighted\u00a0to be working with him to bring important\u00a0and engaging\u00a0stories\u00a0to audiences,\u201d he said on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\n\tKate Ward, managing director, unscript<\/a>ed productions at BBC Studios, said: \u201cDavid has a proven track record of telling bold and nuanced stories from history that resonate globally and can drive conversations and change perspectives. \u00a0We are delighted to be continuing our long working relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
