\n A statue of Christopher Columbus was beheaded by protesters on Thursday as the city tried to remove the monument from a park in Camden, New Jersey.<\/p>\n

The city of Camden said the statue in Farnham Park has \u201clong pained residents of the community\u201d and attempted to remove the structure on Thursday evening in advance of a planned protest at the site, according to Philadelphia\u2019s CBS3.<\/p>\n

But as city workers tried to remove the monument, demonstrators lopped off its head and hoisted it into the air before placing it on the statue\u2019s base.<\/p>\n

\u201cChristopher Columbus to us, as Black Americans, represents a privatizer, a colonizer, a rapist and many other things,\u201d Ronsha Dickerson told the outlet.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo why we ask can\u2019t it be a statue of the late Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X? Why can\u2019t it be Dr. King? Why can\u2019t it be Elijah Muhammad? Why can\u2019t it be someone who has worked hard to help black people?\u201d<\/p>\n

The city also said \u201ca plan to reexamine these outdated symbols of racial division and injustices\u201d is overdue.<\/p>\n

About 40 percent of Camden\u2019s population is black or African American, according to Census figures. The city has been called one of the poorest in the nation.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
