\n\tBefore\/After<\/em> (Avant\/Apr\u00e8s<\/em>), French-Estonian writer, director and actor Mano\u00ebl Dupont\u2019s debut feature about two men who bond over their baldness and travel<\/a> to Istanbul for a hair transplant surgery, will world premiere in the Proxima Competition of the 59th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) next month.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film is about J\u00e9r\u00e9my and Baptiste. \u201cTheir shared baldness takes them to Istanbul, where clinics claim to reverse the course of time,\u201d reads a plot descript<\/a>ion for the film. \u201cAmid shifting winds and silent unrest, they search for meaning in a city not their own. Day by day, a fragile bond forms, in the hope of change.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Before\/After<\/em> was written and directed by Dupont and produced by Boris Baum and Clara Brandt for Brussels-based production company Les Films de la R\u00e9cr\u00e9. Paris- and Marseille-based Outplay Films is handling sales on the movie.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe idea of transformation is at the heart of Before\/After<\/em> (Avant\/Apr\u00e8s<\/em>),\u201d explains Dupont. \u201cWhat marks change? When do we say that something has truly happened \u2014 and why? What first intrigued me was the transplant itself. It\u2019s such a simple act: nothing is added, only moved. One hair follicle is taken from here and implanted there. It\u2019s not addition, it\u2019s displacement \u2014 and that alone is enough to create change.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tContinued the filmmaker: \u201cThat idea guided me narratively as well. I\u2019m not interested in separating reality from fiction \u2014 I want them to nourish and echo each other. With J\u00e9r\u00e9my and Baptiste, we built the characters\u2019 past together. It gave us a quiet foundation, something we could lean on without locking anything in.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tA KVIFF synopsis highlights that the movie \u201cgently explores the themes of queer identity, vulnerability and human intimacy,\u201d adding that \u201cthe pair\u2019s meanders through the Turkish metropolis heighten the atmosphere of the quest\u00a0\u2013 namely the search for beauty in things that aren\u2019t perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe trailer shows leads Baptiste Leclere and J\u00e9r\u00e9my Lamblot visiting a clinic, but especially talking to each other, including with foam on their heads, and bantering, including about the risk of ending up with \u201cshitty hair.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDupont concluded: \u201cThey are a great comic duo, full of irony, which definitely also shaped the film\u2019s story and tone along the way.\u201d<\/p>\n
