<\/span>\u201cI mean, we are getting old,\u201d Will Anderson of Hotline TNT says. \u201cBut I haven\u2019t turned it down yet.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            To be a spectator at a Hotline TNT show is to be so cradled by relentless waves of healing noise. The Ridgewood, New York-based band make lo-fi, shoegaze-adjacent power-pop, but unlike Kevin Shields\u2019 elaborate labyrinth of guitar pedals, TNT stick to a simple, yet winning, formula: fuzz pedals, a tuner, a <i>lot<\/i> of guitars, and a really good hook. Up until last year, Hotline TNT was just Anderson and anyone who was free to spend several months on tour. But in the lead-up to writing and recording <i><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/linktr.ee\/hotlinetnt\">Raspberry Moon<\/a><\/i>, the band\u2019s lush, jangly third album, due for release on June 20 via Third Man Records, Anderson managed to finally seal his band both live and in the studio; it marks the first time that people other than Anderson contributed to writing new Hotline TNT songs. The result is the band\u2019s most realized effort yet, an introspective and bittersweet reflection on endings and beginnings, of fulfilling loves and friendships. On <i>Raspberry Moon,<\/i> the stars have finally aligned.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-271669\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            \u201cWe sort of invited ourselves to the sessions,\u201d bassist Haylen Trammel says when I meet the band for lunch at SoHo\u2019s Hamburger America in mid-April. We\u2019re crammed into a booth with the whole band \u2014 Anderson, Trammel, Lucky Hunter (guitar) and Mike Ralston (drums) \u2014 a day before they\u2019re due to set out on tour across North America with Hippo Campus. Hunter, who lives in Atlanta and is the only member to not live in New York City, only arrived in town last night. He would call Anderson up with his ideas for the next record only to be told, \u201cSounds good. For the <i>next<\/i> record!\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cI had this vision for so long of being like, \u2018I\u2019ve done it my way. It\u2019s working. Circumstance just meant that it h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened that way. Touring logistics and constantly revolving bandmates made it easier to just do everything alone. But in the lead-up to and aftermath of breakout sophomore album <i>Cartwheel\u2019s<\/i> release, the band were busier than ever. Anderson had gone from releasing his scuzzy lo-fi 2021 debut, <i>Nineteen In Love,<\/i> as a YouTube exclusive and running his band website-slash-basketball fanzine, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/assnup.com\/\">Association Update<\/a>, to signing with Jack White\u2019s Third Man Records. Hotline TNT were already touring heavily, and needed permanent members who were able to commit to an even more demanding schedule.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Around 2023, ahead of tours with hardcore and alt-rock bands Quicksand and Wednesday, Trammel joined the band to fill in for a bassist who\u2019d dropped out while Ralston, who was already frequently playing with Anderson in Hotline TNT, invited Hunter to support the group. During these first runs, the quartet solidified their live chemistry.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            Anderson\u2019s songs morph into a different beast when they are played live; the tempos are faster and the volume louder, as if Teenage Fanclub were refracted into a noisy punk band from Florida. Instead of slapping the shoegaze label on them, it makes more sense to understand the band through their \u201990s British rock influences: the yearning of Ride, the lovelorn stadium-sized melodies of Oasis, the jangle-pop of The Jesus and Mary Chain. The enthusiasm of the new band members upped the ante, affirming Hotline TNT\u2019s reputation as a true live force. \u201cThe sound engineer will ask us to turn it down, and it\u2019s usually met with some resistance. We just think louder is better, regardless of what the professionals think,\u201d Trammel says.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-271680\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left pull_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"pull_quote\"><p>\u201cWe just think louder is better, regardless of what the professionals think.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-271674\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            But the trust between bandmates was cemented on the road following <i>Cartwheel\u2019s<\/i> release, through endless days crammed together in the same van. It was here that Anderson would literally road-test new material, working on demos with the band that would become the songs on <i>Raspberry Moon<\/i>. Each member would add their own flair: a riff there, an extra guitar lick or fill here as they wrote songs like \u201cJulia\u2019s War,\u201d an affectionate nod to friends They Are Gutting a Body of Water and the record label helmed by frontman Doug Dulgarian, and \u201cIf Time Flies,\u201d about how being on the road makes the heart grow fonder: \u201cAt all the shows \/ I wanna go and call your phone.\u201d Trammel had a knack for nailing down instrumental transitions, while Ralston acted as a mediator. Playing older songs alongside creating the new allowed the band to constantly grow.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cWe\u2019re never really done writing anything,\u201d Hunter says. \u201cI wanna keep the songs evolving so it doesn\u2019t feel stale to us. While playing OFF Festival in Katowice, Poland, Hunter took a bad fall onstage and dislocated his knee, breaking his kneecap and bruising his femur bone in the process.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cRealistically, I probably should\u2019ve gone home,\u201d Hunter admits. \u201cAt 33, that\u2019s a pretty life-changing injury that I think about every day, and every time I get on stage and play.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            But Hunter was firmly committed to finishing the tour, his leg fitted in a brace and forced to play guitar atop a stool onstage. The band breathed a small sigh of relief and it was a chance to trauma-bond. Now, they have weekly check-ins, where they talk about their feelings and mental states. \u201cIt really is so much like a romantic relationship. Like, \u2018You know I love you so much, but you\u2019re annoying me more than anyone\u2019s ever annoyed me, and that\u2019s OK,\u2019\u201d Anderson says. \u201cWe\u2019re gonna eventually get past it. The band blocked out some time to record around their tour schedule, and the intention was for the band to play on Anderson\u2019s existing demos \u2014 already a first for the band. But the trio weren\u2019t content with being session musicians and had ideas of their own. It wasn\u2019t easy for Anderson to relinquish control. Hunter flat-out refused to play a version of \u201cDance the Night Away\u201d that was originally intended to be way faster, and pop-punk. \u201cI don\u2019t know if it was so much like a question of if I felt like I <i>could<\/i> push back, as much as that I just can\u2019t help myself,\u201d Hunter says.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            With the band\u2019s feedback, it evolved into a sweet, rockier ballad (\u201cMore like Goo Goo Dolls\u2019 <i>A Boy Named Goo\u201d<\/i>). A loving tribute to Anderson\u2019s girlfriend, it\u2019s one of a handful of love songs on the record alongside \u201cCandle\u201d and its heartfelt lines amid crushing guitars: \u201cThey don\u2019t hold a candle to you.\u201d The sulkier, experimental \u201cBreak Right\u201d was written when the band had reached an impasse regarding the structure of one demo that didn\u2019t end up making the record. Hunter, Ralston, and Trammel started jamming out a new song on their own, a moodier tune that matched the atmosphere of the room. It\u2019s not Will writing ballads anymore.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            On one such ballad, \u201cWas I Wrong?,\u201d Anderson reflects on the end of a relationship, questioning if his own perception ultimately clouded his judgment. After consistent disappointment and heartbreak, it\u2019s easy to become jaded and distrusting. But you might be surprised; you never know if someone you meet might end up taking a bullet for you.
