Director Danny Boyle famously shot his post-apocalyptic classic \u201c28 Days Later\u201d on Canon digital cameras, making it easier for him to capture eerie scenes of an abandoned London, and giving the movie\u2019s fast-moving zombies a terrifying immedia<\/a>cy.<\/p>\n

To make his decades-later sequel \u201c28 Years Later\u201d (which opened this weekend<\/a>), Boyle turned to a different piece of consumer tech \u2014 the iPhone. Boyle told Wired<\/a> that by using a rig that could hold 20 iPhone Pro Max cameras, the filmmaking team created \u201cbasically a poor man\u2019s bullet time<\/a>,\u201d capturing the brutal action scenes from a variety of angles.<\/p>\n

Even when he wasn\u2019t using the rig, Boyle (who once directed a biopic of App<\/a>le co-founder Steve Jobs) said the iPhone was the movie\u2019s \u201cprincipal camera,\u201d albeit after disabling settings like automatic focus and adding special accessories.<\/p>\n

\u201cFilming with iPhones allowed us to move without huge amounts of equipment,\u201d Boyle said, noting that the team shot in parts of Northumbria that look like \u201cit would have looked 1,000 years ago,\u201d so the iPhone allowed them \u201cto move quickly and lightly to areas of the countryside that we wanted to retain their lack of human imprint.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
