\n\tThe U.S. military attack on Tehran\u2018s nuclear facilities on Saturday, and fears of a further escalation in the Israel-Iran war, dominated international news<\/a> headlines and broadcasts over the weekend.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile British right-wing tabloid The Sun<\/em> cheered on the U.S. bombings \u2014 \u201cStick It Up Your Bunker\u201d was their triumphant headline \u2014 most outlets warned of the dangers of repercussions from Iran and an expansion of the war beyond the Middle East.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cStarmer warns of \u2018escalation\u2019 risk as UK terror risk rises,\u201d ran the headline of the conservative Daily Express newspaper, quoting the concerns of the British prime minister Keir Starmer that the Iranian regime may begin targeting the U.S. and its allies following Saturday\u2019s attacks, in which the U.S. military dropped so-called bunker-buster bombs on three Iranian nuclear sites, targeting underground facilities used to enrich uranium. The contention of the U.S. government is that Tehran was close to developing a nuclear bomb and that the attacks derailed that effort.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe international media<\/a> isn\u2019t so sure about that.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBombings against Iran set the whole world on fire,\u201d plastered Denmark\u2019s Dagbladet<\/em> newspaper over its front page, with a photo of a glowering Donald Trump and the headline: \u201cLike a Savage,\u201d app<\/a>arently in reference to the U.S. President.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Irish Daily Mirror <\/em>was more succinct: \u201cStop Now\u201d ran its 60-point headline, over a photo of a MAGA-hat wearing POTUS. \u201cAll-out war fear as world braces for Tehran\u2019s retaliation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTelevision coverage focused on the extent and effectiveness of the U.S. strikes \u2014 with extensive debate as to whether the bombings had, in fact, destroyed Iran\u2019s nuclear program \u2014 and on how Iran would respond.<\/p>\n

\n\tCNN\u2019s Senior International Correspondent Fred Pleitgen, the first Western journalist to report from Iran following the start of the war, reported on anti-American protests inside the country, suggesting the bombings may have strengthened support for the Iranian regime, even among former critics.<\/p>\n

\n\tAl Jazeera reported extensively from Iranian government sources, quoting Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, in his first comments since the U.S. attacks, promising to punish \u201cthe Zionist enemy.\u201d Speaking on Iranian state television, armed forces spokesman Ebrahim Zolfaghari said the \u201chostile act\u201d of the U.S. attack \u201cwill widen the scope of legitimate targets of the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran and pave the way for the extension of war in the region\u2026The fighters of Islam will inflict serious, unpredictable consequences on you with powerful and targeted (military) operations.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTrump has hinted at a possible regime change in Tehran, saying, \u201cIf the current Iranian regime is unable to make Iran great again, why wouldn\u2019t there be a regime change?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn an editorial piece, the all-news network France 24 called the U.S. bombing a gamble of \u201cforce over diplomacy,\u201d saying the strikes brought \u201cthe conflict into the open, and the consequences may not be clear for some time to come.\u201d Reuters TV concurred, saying the \u201cstrikes on Iran mark Trump\u2019s biggest, and riskiest, foreign policy gamble.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs the world\u2019s media digests and analyses Saturday\u2019s attacks, fighting between Iran and Israel continued. Israel\u2019s army said it hit military infrastructure sites in western Iran\u2019s Kermanshah on Monday, and said Iran had launched several missiles towards Israel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
