\n Teachers at a Manhattan high school were threatened with docked pay if they didn\u2019t return to their classrooms Tuesday, sources told the Post.<\/p>\n

Citing coronavirus concerns, dozens of teachers at the High School for Economics and Finance declined to enter their building and instead sat in chairs in front of the facility while manning laptops.<\/p>\n

Administrators ultimately lost their patience with the refusal and told teachers that Department of Education attorneys had given the green light to dock their pay if they didn\u2019t suspend the protest.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not asking teachers to work in buildings that aren\u2019t safe, and the High School of Economics and Finance is ready and was app<\/a>roved by professional engineers during walkthroughs and inspections last week,\u201d said DOE spokesperson Danielle Filson. \u201cStaff who are not approved to work remotely and don\u2019t report inside their buildings will be marked as absent and we will determine next steps.\u201d<\/p>\n

Union sources confirmed the escalation Tuesday and United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew fired back at the DOE.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe educators from the High School Economics and Finance are working on the sidewalk,\u201d he said in a statement. \u201cTheir building is not ready, but they are.\u201d<\/p>\n

Staffers told the Post Tuesday morning that they were dissatisfied with COVID-19 precautions in the building and feared for their health and safety.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not about a paycheck,\u201d said one teacher about the administrative threat. \u201cIt\u2019s about being safe \u2013 us, our families and our students. You\u2019ve got to stand for something.\u201d<\/p>\n

In pressing ahead with a partial reopening of city schools on Monday, City Hall has stressed low infection rates among roughly 17,000 city teachers who have been tested thus far.<\/p>\n

As of Monday, 55 tested positive for COVID-19 \u2013 a rate of 0.3 percent.<\/p>\n

Mayor Bill de Blasio has acknowledged that he expects sporadic coronavirus cases to emerge in the coming weeks but said that DOE response protocols are in place.<\/p>\n

Teachers and union leaders have pushed back on that assertion, arguing that testing and tracing procedures have been inconsistent and that some schools lack adequate protective gear.<\/p>\n

De Blasio has stressed that more than 500,000 city students are slated to return to their schools next week and that it\u2019s incumbent upon staffers to accommodate them and their families.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
