\n Liberal: I Worry Dems Won\u2019t Concede<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI find myself truly worried about only one scenario\u201d this November, reveals Shadi Hamid at The Atlantic: President Trump \u201cwill win re-election, and Democrats and others on the left will be unwilling, even unable, to accept the result.\u201d Liberals, after all, \u201cnever really came to terms\u201d with his 2016 win. A Joe Biden loss, after he was \u201cthe clear favorite all summer, would provoke mass disillusion with electoral politics as a means of change.\u201d If \u201cDemocrats can\u2019t beat a candidate as unpopular as Trump during a devastating pandemic and a massive economic contraction, then are they even capable of winning presidential elections anymore?\u201d If Dems don\u2019t \u201cbelieve that they can win the next time around,\u201d their \u00ad\u201cincentives to play the spoiler increase.\u201d<\/p>\n

Neocon: The Left May Make Me Vote for Trump<\/strong><\/p>\n

She didn\u2019t vote for Donald Trump in 2016 \u2014 but, Danielle Pletka explains at The Washington Post, Democrats may force her to do so this year. She fears \u201cTrump\u2019s erratic, personality-driven decision-making\u201d and \u201chis delusion that he can manage rogue leaders.\u201d But she fears \u201cthe leftward lurch of the Democratic Party even more.\u201d Not only might Joe Biden be \u201ca figurehead president\u201d script<\/a>ed by \u201chis party\u2019s hard-left ideologues,\u201d but the Democratic-run Congress may \u201cbegin an assault on the institutions of government that preserve the nation\u2019s small-\u2018d\u2019 democracy,\u201d including packing the Supreme Court. And \u201can entirely Democratic-run Washington\u201d would accelerate the intolerant dominance of \u201cManhattan-San Francisco progressive mores.\u201d In short, \u201cTrump, for all his flaws, could be all that stands \u00adbetween our imperfect democracy and the tyranny of the woke left.\u201d<\/p>\n

Councilman: Liquor Authority\u2019s Political Hit Job<\/strong><\/p>\n

Councilman Joe Borelli blasts Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio on Twitter<\/a> for allegedly siccing the State Liquor Authority on a Staten Island family restaurant. Joyce\u2019s Tavern \u201chad never been visited\u201d by the SLA, \u201cnot during COVID, not before, and had no violations.\u201d On Thursday, Borelli held a book-signing on its outdoor patio, \u00adadvertising it \u201cfrom the same Twitter account I use to bash Cuomo and de Blasio on a daily basis.\u201d Then: \u201cWhat a coincidence,\u201d the \u201cvery next night, the SLA goons come in for a surprise random \u00adinspection.\u201d The restaurant was donating proceeds to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, and the SLA noted a few \u201ccharitable patrons, their legs growing tired, sat in chairs in the indoor portion of the restaurant,\u201d neither eating nor drinking. \u201cJoyce\u2019s will now likely face a $25,000 fine.\u201d Asks Borelli: \u201cHow do we let a neighborhood business that was giving back to our 9\/11 families and first responders just get fined out of business?\u201d<\/p>\n

Foreign desk: New Japanese PM\u2019s Baggage<\/strong><\/p>\n

Perhaps nothing in the tenure of Japan\u2019s new prime minister, Yoshihide Suga, will be \u201cas interesting as how he got the job,\u201d snarks Philip Patrick at The Spectator. His \u201ccause was massively boosted\u201d when party leader Toshihiro Nikai \u201cdecided that in a time of \u2018emergency,\u2019 the franchise should be limited to parliamentary members only, among whom Suga is popular.\u201d Nikai will \u201clikely be rewarded with keeping his job and very possibly retaining influence\u201d over Suga. As to what to expect from the new PM, \u201cwe\u2019re back to those deals again.\u201d He has indicated he will carry on predecessor Shinzo Abe\u2019s program, \u201ca pledge that may have been part of the price of his accession.\u201d But if he is \u201cto make a mark,\u201d he will need to prove he is \u201chis own man.\u201d<\/p>\n

Election watch: Mail-In Jeopardizes Equal Vote<\/strong><\/p>\n

Universal mail-in voting this November risks \u201cboth the dilution of legitimate votes and the disenfranchisement of eligible voters,\u201d worries C. Boyden Gray at The Hill. \u201cHaphazardly lobbing a ballot to everyone on the voter rolls\u201d could be a disaster, especially since more people moved because of the pandemic. \u201cWhoever gets long-gone voters\u2019 mis-mailed ballots might never return them \u2014 or worse, might cast them as fraudulent votes.\u201d Only standard absentee-voting procedures with uniform deadlines and monitored drop-boxes safeguard the ballot as \u201cthe live ammunition of the consent of the governed.\u201d Without them, judges or Congress may pick the next commander-in-chief.<\/p>\n
