Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin is arguing that the digital identification app<\/a>roach being promoted by Sam Altman\u2019s World project has real privacy risks.<\/p>\n

Previously known as Worldcoin, World was created under Altman and Alex Blania\u2019s Tools for Humanity. The organization says it can help distinguish between AI agents and human beings by scanning users\u2019 eyeballs and creating a unique identity for them on the blockchain.<\/p>\n

In a lengthy post<\/a>, Buterin noted that World\u2019s approach of using zero-knowledge proofs<\/a> to verify human identity while protecting anonymity is also being explored by various digital passport and digital ID projects. And he acknowledged that \u201con the surface,\u201d using a \u201cZK-wrapped digital ID\u201d could contribute to \u201cprotecting our social media<\/a>, voting, and all kinds of internet services against manipulation from sybils and bots, all without compromising on privacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, Buterin suggested that this approach still boils down to a \u201cone-per-person\u201d ID system, which creates significant risks.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the real world, pseudonymity general<\/a>ly requires having multiple accounts \u2026 so under one-per-person ID, even if ZK-wrapped, we risk coming closer to a world where all of your activity must de-facto be under a single public identity,\u201d he wrote. \u201cIn a world of growing risk (eg. drones), taking away the option for people to protect themselves through pseudonymity has significant downsides.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a concrete example of the risks, Buterin noted that the U.S. government recently started requiring student and scholar visa applicants<\/a> to set their social media accounts to public, so that it could screen those accounts for \u201chostility.\u201d Similarly, he suggested that even if there\u2019s no public link between different accounts created under a single digital ID, \u201ca government could force someone to reveal their secret, so that they can see their entire activity.\u201d<\/p>\n

How, then, can governments, online services, and anyone else hope to verify that someone\u2019s a real human being without forcing them to compromise their privacy? Buterin is advocating for an approach emphasizing \u201cpluralistic identity,\u201d in which \u201cthere is no single dominant issuing authority, whether that\u2019s a person, or an institution, or a platform.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pluralistic systems can either be \u201cexplicit\u201d (they ask users to verify their identity based on testimonials from already-verified users) or \u201cimplicit\u201d (relying on a variety of different identity systems) \u2014 in his view, these represent \u201cthe best realistic solution.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn my view, the ideal outcome of \u2018one-per-person\u2019 identity projects that exist today is if they were to merge with social-graph-based identity,\u201d Buterin concluded.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
