Looks like App<\/a>le has its first bona fide box office hit.<\/p>\n

The company has already produced critically-acclaimed and award-winning films for Apple TV+. In fact, while Netflix has reportedly spent millions on its Oscar campaigns<\/a>, Apple\u2019s \u201cCoda\u201d remains the only movie produced by a streaming service to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.<\/p>\n

It has, however, been a different story at the box office \u2014 at best, returns have fallen short of ambitious budgets, and with \u201cArgylle,\u201d the company had a spectacular flop. Last year, Apple reportedly decided<\/a> to scale back on both budgets and theatrical releases, leading to canceled projects and criticism from directors.<\/p>\n

Things have finally turned around with \u201cF1\u201d \u2014 currently the number one movie in theaters, on-track to earn $55.6 million<\/a> this weekend at the domestic box office. With $144 million in global ticket sales, \u201cF1\u201d will soon surpass \u201cNapoleon\u201d ($228 million) as Apple\u2019s highest-grossing film.<\/p>\n

\u201cF1\u201d\u2019s director, Joseph Kosinski, previously helmed \u201cTop Gun: Maverick,\u201d and in many ways, the new movie sounds like a loose copy of the \u201cMaverick\u201d formula, combining realistic, you-are-there cinematography (Brad Pitt is really driving those cars<\/a>!) with a familiar narrative about an older veteran forced to work with a young upstart who needs to learn a thing or two about old-fashioned, analog grit.<\/p>\n

\u201cF1\u201d (which is being distributed in the U.S. by Warner Bros.) likely benefited from the surging U.S. popularity of Formula One racing, fueled in part by Netflix\u2019s docuseries<\/a> \u201cDrive to Survive.\u201d Much of it was filmed at actual Formula One races, and driver Lewis Hamilton also signed on as a producer.<\/p>\n

Apple CEO Tim Cook even joined Hamilton for a Variety cover story<\/a> in which Cook said the company was able to \u201cbring some things that were uniquely Apple to the movie, like our camera technology<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0The plan, he added, was \u201cto have the whole of the company support it as well \u2014 our retail operation and everything.\u201d\u00a0(Not all customers have been pleased with the cross-promotion.)<\/p>\n

While Apple\u2019s bet seems to be paying off, it\u2019s still not clear whether \u201cF1\u201d \u2014 with a reported budget of more than $200 million \u2014 will actually make a profit in theaters. Before its release, one box office analyst told Vulture<\/a> that even in success, the movie \u201cmay end up being a very expensive commercial for original content on Apple TV.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
