\n A Boston University professor was crushed to death by an elevator in her apartment building when it suddenly dropped, trapp<\/a>ing her between floors.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat my wife said she saw was the lady\u2019s arms like hanging onto her package,\u201d building resident Eric Carmichael told the local FOX-TV affiliate of the Monday evening horror that killed French lecturer Carrie O\u2019Connor, 38.<\/p>\n

A man who witnessed the accident had to be taken to the hospital for trauma.<\/p>\n

\u201cI heard someone that was bringing in a package out in the hallway, and then I heard an ungodly scream,\u201d resident Leanne Scorzoni told the ABC-TV affiliate.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen we ran out into the hallway, and we saw a gentleman who was obviously in distress. He was screaming and hyperventilating, saying, \u2018She\u2019s dead! She\u2019s dead!\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

A source told The Sun, \u201cHe saw things that no one should ever see.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Connor had just moved into the building on Commonwealth Avenue a few weeks ago and was getting onto the elevator with a box on the first floor around 5:15 p.m. when the lift jolted downward, residents said.<\/p>\n

Scorzoni told CBS that the man who witnessed the accident \u201cwas helping [O\u2019Connor] with a box into the building, and he was going up the stairs, and he had told her, \u2018Hey just be careful,\u2019 because \u2026 you have to pull the door across and then step in and then press the button.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you have something in there, it can trigger a sensor,\u201d she said of the lift, which she described as \u201cold-fashioned.\u201d \u201c[The witness] believes that whatever [O\u2019Connor] was trying to get in there hit the sensor, and then it started moving.\u201d<\/p>\n

The elevator car\u2019s roof was visible from the lobby after the incident, residents said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe car had to have gone at least halfway down,\u201d Scorzoni said.<\/p>\n

An autopsy showed that O\u2019Connor died of \u201ctraumatic asphyxiation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her profile on Boston University\u2019s Web site says she graduated with a BS degree from Virginia Tech, an MA degree from Middlebury College and a PhD in French Studies at Louisiana State University.<\/p>\n

The Massachusetts agency responsible for overseeing elevator safety said the lift passed inspection at the 1920 building last year, according to the local NBC station. It was not clear how old the elevator is.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
