AI slop songs are flooding Spotify \u2014 and the latest hit is by an indie rock band called The Velvet Sundown. <\/span>The track\u2019s success has intensified the ongoing debate on whether or not music streaming sites should label AI-generated songs.<\/span><\/p>\n The group has attracted 474,341 monthly listeners on Spotify in under a month. Its top track, \u201cDust on the Wind\u201d<\/span> \u2014 <\/span><\/i>which sounds similar to the 1977 Kansas hit \u201cDust in the Wind\u201d\u00a0 \u2014 has been played over 380,0006 times since its release on June 20.<\/span><\/p>\n The Velvet Sundown was first flagged as potentially AI-generated by <\/span>Reddit users<\/span><\/a>, who pointed out some suspicious signs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n A profile picture that looks as if it was created by AI. An <\/span>Instagram account<\/span><\/a> filled with images of band members that look\u2026weird. And a bio with a purported quote from <\/span>Billboard<\/span><\/i> magazine saying their music sounds like \u201cthe memory of something you never lived, and somehow makes it feel real\u201d \u2014 a quote that app<\/a>ears to have never actually been published.<\/span><\/p>\n TNW Conference 2025 – That’s a wrap!<\/p>\n Check out the highlights!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n There\u2019s also no online trace of the band\u2019s members listed in its Spotify bio: \u201cvocalist and mellotron sorcerer Gabe Farrow, guitarist Lennie West, bassist-synth alchemist Milo Rains, and free-spirited percussionist Orion \u2018Rio\u2019 Del Mar.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Yet, there\u2019s nothing on The Velvet Sundown\u2019s Spotify page to confirm the band is AI-generated. Its tracks even appeared on some Reddit<\/a>ors\u2019 \u201cDiscover Weekly\u201d playlists, an in-app feature that recommends <\/span>new songs to users.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The Velvet Sundown is also available on<\/span> Apple Music<\/span><\/a> and<\/span> Amazon Music<\/span><\/a>. The only major streaming site where it\u2019s <\/span>flagged<\/span><\/a> as potentially AI-generat<\/span>ed is Deezer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Earlier this month, Deezer became the first music streaming service to start tagging AI-generated content. Its algorithm can identify artificially created songs made using several popular generative AI models, including Suno and Udio, which turn basic text prompts into \u201cmusic.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Over 20,000 fully AI-generated tracks flood Deezer\u2019s platform each day. In April, bot-made audio made up 18% of \u201ctotal uploaded content\u201d \u2014 almost double the 10% figure the company shared in January.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Another popular AI-generated band is The Devil Inside, featured on a recent episode of John Oliver\u2019s <\/span>Last Week Tonight,<\/span><\/i> titled \u201cAI Slop.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The Devil Inside\u2019s top track, \u201cBones in the River,\u201d has racked up 1.6 million listens on Spotify since it was released on May 16. Interestingly, the track has no credited creator under the platform\u2019s \u201cView credits\u201d tab.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n However, on Deezer the same song is flagged as AI-generated and credited to L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Tam\u00e1si, a Hungarian musician known for being the drummer of Honky\u202fCrew, an electro\u2011swing band. It represents a rare named credit for an AI-generated artist, who typically <\/span>remain anonymous<\/span><\/a>. We\u2019ve reached out to Tam\u00e1si for comment and will update this piece if they reply.<\/span><\/p>\n Deezer is an outlier in its offensive on AI-generated music. <\/span>Spotify has yet to launch any equivalent detector tool. It also hasn\u2019t made any attempts to label such content, at least not publicly. Other music streaming platforms, including Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Tidal, have remained virtually mute on the topic.<\/span><\/p>\n It\u2019s perhaps unsurprising that popular music streaming platforms are sitting on their hands. There are currently no regulations on the flow of AI-generated songs, or a consensus on what makes them acceptable or not. Even Deezer is divided.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cAI is not inherently good or bad, but we believe a responsible and transparent approach is key to building trust with our users and the music industry, said Alexis Lanternier, Deezer\u2019s CEO, last week.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe are also clear in our commitment to safeguarding the rights of artists and songwriters at a time where copyright law is being put into question in favour of training AI models.\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Last year, a group of US record labels sued Suno and Udio, alleging copyright infringement on a \u201cmassive scale.\u201d However, the two companies claim that training their models on copyrighted music falls under \u201cfair use,\u201d a<\/span> common defence<\/span> from AI firms.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
