OPEN THAT SHIT UPPPPP!!!!!!!<\/i>\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            It\u2019s March 16, and I\u2019m in the pit at Rolling Loud California\u2019s smallest stage, sandwiched between teenagers and early twenty-somethings corralled into a square of glorified parking lot between spray-painted shipping containers. Wearing a zebras<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>e mask, Che bounds from one end of the stage to the other, screeching h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ily as the crowd raps every bar from his thermonuclear 2024 single \u201cPizza Time.\u201d Behind him, a flurry of hypersaturated graphics by close collaborator Gavin Matson match the intensity of his sinister, sugary sound.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cI gotta do something with my life before it&#8217;s over,\u201d Che tells me a few months later. \u201cI want to be heard. I <i>need<\/i> to be heard, because I have a message I\u2019m trying to get across.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-272127\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Now it\u2019s 10 PM on a Friday night in late May. We\u2019re holed up at Impulse Studios in Manhattan\u2019s Garment District, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Game<\/a> 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals glowing on the TV as Che plays track after track from his forthcoming sophomore album <i>REST IN BASS<\/i>. His team had been eyeing an April release at the top of the year, but Che wasn\u2019t satisfied with the material for the album. It&#8217;s been in the works since his late summer 2024 debut <i>Sayso Says<\/i>, the release that cemented Che as a torchbearer for a new generation of underground hip-hop. \u201cWe&#8217;ve been in this process for some months now, trying to bring me to a different headspace.\u201d So the date has been pushed back again and again, to the point that the final mixes for <i>REST IN BASS<\/i> still haven\u2019t been submitted.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-272128\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left video\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Che - Green Day\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9QVTedHyTX0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n \/\/trackYouTubeVideo('272128');\n<\/script><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-272129\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Che describes his music as \u201crap slash electronic,\u201d but where his debut pulled from rainbowy EDM and nightcore vocaloid, <i>RIB<\/i> is sharper and darker, sawtooth synths grating against open hi-hats and hollowed-out 808s, degraded samples mired beneath sludgy basslines and plodding drums. Some songs are so loud their mixes fully redline, glitching out when Che attempts to play them through the studio speakers (\u201cBoss Up,\u201d \u201cMDMA\u201d). Others are already stitched together just so, like a track tentatively called \u201cU Da Shit\u201d where Che references Rihanna over a Crystal Castles flip. \u201cMANNEQUIN\u201d is a strong contender for song of the summer  &#8212; think \u201cGNARLY\u201d by KATSEYE for Zoomers whose J Hope is Nettspend.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Che often fixates on death in his music, but <i>RIB<\/i> takes things full kamikaze, from yelping \u201cI just put my opp block on a fucking canvas\u201d on \u201cHellraiser\u201d to frequently detailing his own demise. On standout \u201cDior Leopard,\u201d he shrieks, \u201cgo 27 club, kill myself, Cobain!\u201d before namedropping K3, while \u201cDie Young\u201d bleakly declares, \u201cI\u2019m gon&#8217; die young, we ain\u2019t never growing up.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            \u201cMy love for music is so dire. The sound, the speakers, no matter what, you hear it,\u201d Che says. \u201cAnd I\u2019ll die for the music, so \u2014 <i>REST IN BASS<\/i>.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-272133\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left pull_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"pull_quote\"><p>It\u2019s just something people haven\u2019t heard. And I want to give it to them.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-272130\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Born Chase Shaun Mitchell, Che grew up an only child in Atlanta. His free time was mostly spent \u201cplaying with my partners outside a lot, having fun, being reckless.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cI was definitely in my own shell,\u201d he says. \u201cBut if you got to know me, I definitely got jokes to crack with you.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Around the house, Che\u2019s parents played \u201ca lot of dirty trap music,\u201d including Bankroll Fresh, Street Money Boochie, and Lil Wayne. He traces his love for dance music back to his mom\u2019s affinity for R&amp;B, and cites Future and Young Thug as formative influences, \u201ceven without their rapping, just their mindset, the person they are.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            \u201cI had no idea what I was gonna do when I was younger honestly,\u201d he admits. \u201cWhen I found my love for music later on in my life, I appreciated it because [music] was always a part of me.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-272131\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Che is among a growing contingent of rappers to blow up off TikTok, but of their cohort, he\u2019s one of the most successful. Winter 2022 singles \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rLK3AW5WvJ0\">agenda<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aO1xX16rG6g\">euphoria<\/a>\u201d fit more neatly under the label of digicore, but the former\u2019s success in particular healthily eclipsed many of his peers in that subgenre as well as its better-known, commercially-fracked sibling hyperpop.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            Around this time Che was in a Discord collective called 4ersona that included prettifun and Specxfic; skaiwater and Rich Amiri both contributed to their summer 2022 mixtape <i>O\u2019Four<\/i>. On an early track like \u201ctomb,\u201d you can hear Che\u2019s wall-of-sound approach coming into focus, though he\u2019s reticent on that era of his career. \u201cI can\u2019t really speak on that,\u201d Che snickers when I ask how the group met.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Last summer\u2019s <i>Sayso Says<\/i> capped off a year of growth. \u201cThat was the most concentrated I\u2019ve been for an album,\u201d Che says, citing the research and worldbuilding that went into the music and its presentation. From strobing victory lap \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VegSbAW2RUU\">SASKA YOU MADE IT<\/a>\u201d to 3024 D.A.R.E. ad \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pxnpLSpwm5Q\">NUNCA HACER COCAINA<\/a>,\u201d <i>Sayso Says<\/i> melds rage rap with sparkling synths and rave-ready rhythms. EDM-inflected hip-hop often overplays its hand, better suited for the kandi-swap festival circuit than SoundCloud playlists. But there is a basis to it at the same time\u2026 Just doing your research and understanding all concepts of it, so you can be able to appeal to every genre, no matter who. Oh, you wanna hear an electronic song? I have it for you. \u2018I wanna hear a pop song,\u2019 I have it for you, bet.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Che\u2019s love of overwhelming sonics stems from his appreciation for Slayer, Black Flag, and The Misfits, and he brings a similar more-is-more ethos to his own music. On last year\u2019s \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yHLxZKLSkvo\">miley cyrus<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ew5-ygNHV2g\">pizza time<\/a>,\u201d blackhole 808s produced by prettifun slingshot Che\u2019s delirious AutoTune flow to stellar new heights.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            Those tracks didn\u2019t appear on his last project, but their balance of joyous melodies and blunt-force bass feels key to understanding how Che arrived at the caustic palette for <i>REST IN BASS<\/i>. Some of these songs have been in the works since <i>Sayso<\/i>, although he reassures me the majority are fresh. Like his feature on \u201cUnstoppable,\u201d <i>REST IN BASS<\/i> cribs heavily from Playboi Carti\u2019s rapidfire, high-pitch flows, but where Carti uses his upper register to convey menace or abjection, Che is more carefree, his falsetto like a firework streaking skyward. He squeals, \u201cthey say I sold my soul, okay let em buy it\u201d with abandon over an azure beat on \u201cFinger Fuck\u201d and comes across remarkably sober when his delivery softens on \u201cMDMA,\u201d murmuring, \u201cI hope you listen to every word I say [&#8230;] the party never ends, I\u2019m glad you came.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-272135\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Whatever Che lacks in technical skill, he makes up for with thematic emphasis, and so he\u2019s unconcerned by those who would dismiss him as a Carti clone. \u201cI am inspired, so it can&#8217;t hurt my feelings when I know I&#8217;m true to myself,\u201d he says.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            The singles and snippets Che has put out so far this year have broadly come through neon and plush as a Murakami pillow, but the songs he played me at the studio in May were notably tougher and more abrasive. Che always made the sort of tunes that demand you crank the volume up, but <i>REST IN BASS<\/i> is eager to live up to its name.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            The harder sound is mirrored by writing that feels possessed whatever the subject matter. January single \u201cPose For The Pic\u201d presses on the tenderest parts of che\u2019s discography, those fleeting moments where wide-eyed youth meets the heart-on-sleeve influence of Hayley Williams and Alice Glass (tatted on his ribcage) to truly and honestly <i>feel<\/i>. Che might be crooning about self-sufficiency, but when he shudders, \u201ca vampire needs his blood \/ without you collapse my lungs \/ without you relapse on drugs,\u201d it\u2019s as raw as a skinned knee. We\u2019re backstage at Summer Smash in the Chicago suburbs, sweating through our respective outfits amidst a mounting heat wave. It\u2019s been three weeks since I saw him at the studio in New York and three months since I saw him on stage in Los Angeles; he\u2019s had bags under his eyes every time we\u2019ve spoken prior, but today they\u2019re accentuated with dark eyeshadow, so he looks not just tired but undead. Initially, I think Nosferatu, but when Che takes the stage backed by muted tone images of the crucifixion (courtesy again, Gavin Matson), he comes across more like a blasphemous zombie.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            As the crowd elbows and moshes around me, I suddenly remember something Che told me back in New York, after we talked about his time opening on tour for Sahbabii this spring. Whenever we met, Che was thoughtful and unfailingly polite, down to earth despite his escalating ambitions. But occasionally, he bared his fangs, smirking if not quite snarling.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cI want the crowd to feel like they&#8217;re at a ritual and they&#8217;re just here to praise me [&#8230;] It\u2019s like a savior of music thing. I want people to hear my music and feel safe, like there\u2019s no struggles at all, nothing to worry about at all in the world.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cThe best thing for me is to always remind myself that it&#8217;s not a job,\u201d he says, growing more serious. \u201cLike, you&#8217;re having fun. This is what you do for fun.
